So I just recently got given a beautiful old Yamaha RM1x sequencer. Whilst it is fun on it's own I would still love to try and use as a MIDI controller with Ableton. This is where I am having some problems. I am using a MIDI to usb converter, and I know the signal is going through, I can see the response in Ableton (the little signal near the MIDI map button), however every time I try and map any of the keys or dials to Ableton I get absolutely no response.
I'm not sure if I am just stupid, and it's something obvious, or if there is a problem with my MIDI/USB converter. Anyway, if anyone knows how to help me I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks

Please explain:
1. What do you mean by response in Ableton? Do you mean you can see some midi signal in Ableton when you tweak a knob on the RM1x?
2. What do you mean by map? Are you noting the midi channel the knob/control comes in on and trying to allocate it to some function in Ableton or is there some auto function in Ableton you're trying??
Sorry - i might be able to help with the midi stuff but i'm not an Ableton user and it's been years since touching an RM1x... i was never a guru on them even when new.

In answer to question 1. yes. There is a midi signal when I tweak a knob on the RM1x. And to 2. Yes I am trying to allocate functions in Ableton to the RM1x, however it doesn't seem to work, which is interesting because the keyboard on the sequencer has automatically been assigned to the keyboard software in Ableton . . . meaning they produce sound, but I still can't change their function . . .
Sorry it's hard to explain exactly, not sure how much sense this made . . .

Sounds like the rmx1 is sending ok but ableton needs some sort of internal config for whatever your trying to trigger or control. I don't know shit about abletom either.
p.s I've seen those rmx1's make cool hardware sequencers....16 ch's

It made plenty of sense. Like Streak said, it's sounds like an Ableton config issue. You've got the midi setup in the RM1x going ok and Ableton receives the signals, you may just need to muck around with allocating the midi channels to the functions you want. Also make sure there's no midi filter active in Ableton... but umm, yeah... i'm useless with ablertronz.

Yea I kind of guessed that might be the problem. Suppose I'll just keep fiddling until I work it out. I know it can be done though because I have heard of people who use it with Ableton . . .
Mmm . . . The RM1x sequencers are great. Cheesy sounds, but a great layout! I picked the RM1x and the Akai S2000 sampler up off a friend for free. Total score!

chances are the rmx knobs dont send out midi cc that ableton can hear
if you're on a mac use midi montior to listen to the midi in activity
it might be sending NNPRN (?) or something else
if so you can use midi pipe to translate what it it sending on knob turns into midi cc's so ableton can hear them
