Hey Punks,

Curious to how people are incorporating their studios into the house and contents insurance?

Without giving away your home street address and days / times you're away from home: :(

- Were you required to record your equipment serial numbers?Did you need photos? Receipts?

- Did you insure specific items for market value / replacement value, or the modern day equivalent's value?Or was there a general accepted value?

- Is a there an insurer (Australia or Worldwide) that you do - or don't - recommend?

Cheers folks. 8)

Last time I had a home studio with lots of equipment, I was insured (contents or 'renters insurance') with -now that I think about it I can't remember but I'm pretty sure I went with someone I already had insurance with, possibly RACV- never had to claim so can't comment. I would recommend choosing one that you already have some insurance with and get a discount, even if they don't offer one you should be able to negotiate one as an existing customer.

They didn't require me to take down serial numbers but suggested it was a good idea to have photographic evidence of what I own. Wasn't required to insure specific items for specific values, I think they generally pay market value on items up to a certain cost (like $5000 or something, prolly depends on the insurer) so if you have big ticket items like a Jupiter 8 or something like that, you might list that for a specific value.
Perhaps it was a result of anxiety.

I list each item and its value for all my bigger ticket items
They never asked for them but I did it anyway
I have photos of everything - again they didnt ask but i did it anyway
As for value i put down a the top end ebay price for my old bits of kit
my new stuff i put down rrp

the only condition is the items cant be used commercially - as I'm more of a hobbyist I think thats fits fine.

That is exactly what I have done with my equipment at home. If you do lose or damage anything, for gods sake do not say you were doing a gig and some fucker ran off with your gear.

The problem is that if you want your gear to be 100% fully covered for EVERY eventuality you must have it insured as commercial equipment.
