I had a couple of rack mounted drum synths that dont get much love
mainly because I prefer writing beat x0x style on boxes

I really wanted to use something like a tenori on and its bounce mode sequencer but its a bit $$$ for me

I saw one of Tom Cosm's videos on making a step sequencer in live using follow actions and ended up making one for my external synths

I posted the videos on youtube so have a look, happy to answer any questions on it - its pretty straightforward and its definitely a fun way to sketch out beats
be awesome with launchpad on monome or something

They are close to what I wanted from an easy launcher - key mapping adds any easy way to do fills, might be easier to map keys to non looping one shots rather than the 4/4 shown but los of room for variations etc

A velocity plugin on each channel would be a good way to control the volume of each sound if you're not routing individual outs from a drum synth
