So, you got midi signal into Ableton and you can hit notes on the x7 and have sound come out the monitors.

Are you recording the midi signal or trying to record the audio output?

If it's the midi signal/notes not being recorded, i think you've got an Albeton issue, and i canna help but someone will who use Ableton.

If it's an audio recording issue, i suspect you haven't configured your Ableton Audio channel to use the DSP/Mixdown channels of the Motu. This will result in an empty track... particularly if you're using a VSTi as the sound for the VSTi only comes out of the Motu, not back into it. Not sure how you change that in Ableton, but would be worth checking that you have the DSP/Mixdon channels of the motu selected as the input channels in Ableton.

'ang on... are you trying to record midi into Ableton and play a VSTi with the x7... or are you trying to record sounds coming from the x7 into Ableton?

Is Ableton showing anything recorded in the file now? Like, does it have a wave looking shape? If it does, then you've fixed the record issue and now need to select your Ableton channel outputs to the Motu "Main Outs" (if that's what your monitors are plugged into).

If that doesn't help, try re-posting your question and setup in the Ableton section of the site. Your audio setup sounds like it's OK to me - just an Ableton config issue.
