Budget?

And I assume you're talkin' hardware?

Hmmm....

Firstly, subtractive.

Secondly, lots of knobs and sliders.

What to choose?

What did you come up with?

If you want a cheap and easy to use analogue synth, I cannot recommend enough the Spectral Audio Neptune2.

It is an old style analogue synth with no presets, no menus, one knob/switch per function, MIDI, immensely awesome sound.

Although for a first synth, you may want something that's polyphonic, multitimbral, etc just so that you get a bit more bang for your buck. In which case I'd say go with a VA. Something like a secondhand Nord Lead or early Virus, or something like the Novation K-station or X-station.

We probly need more info like 'Budget' as Speco said, and control ie midi or cv, I'm assuming midi. And how many different noises you want it to make at the same time, mutitimbral?

Well well well, how on earth have I gotten through the last decade without even knowing about this thing? I must have read 'Spectral Audio Neptune2' = 'soft synth' all these years and thought 'blah blah' and moved on. That looks great! Could be a bit of a downer having no patch memories for the n00b who wants some instant recall / instant gratification, and agreed also on the polyphonic front, but hey, this would be immense bit of fun to play and by all accounts stacks up against the best of the rest. What are/were the Aussie stores selling 'em for?

Yeah, any of these. Chuck in Roland, I'd stop once I'd gotten past the JP8000 / 8080 era. There's also the old Korg MS2000 range. Not sure how easy they're all to find these days, but they do come up every now and then. Wait, hasn't Ehsan got a JP-8080 with a 'sale' sticker on it at the mo'? One of the best to learn on, IMO, as there's very little menu diving required.
