Hi guys, I'm new here. I'm not the biggest tech-head but I love my music and have quite a bit of experience with recording.

I've been using a Tascam US-144 for the last couple of years, and I've had the problems with drivers which seem all too common these days. No way am I buying another interface to rely on my laptop's interaction with it, so I'm thinking I'll invest in a multitrack recorder.

Now, I've been looking at the Samson Zoom R16, and I must say I'm completely infatuated with it. However, as tempted as I am, I really shouldn't keep my blinders up and go straight for the first one that appears to me. So, if you guys could suggest some recorders to have a look at around the $400-500 mark, it would be much appreciated.

I don't really need any particular amount of XLR inputs, as I generally record in a layered fashion, and if there are any with MIDI inputs (I haven't seen any) that would be handy.

Cheers!

I've got the original Zoom H4 and it's awesome! Not sure if it's exactly what you're after. But it has 2 x-y condenser mic's in-built. Has two XLR and quarter inch inputs. Has a four track mixer in built and you can record in mp3 or wav (44.1, 48, 96kHz) to an SD card and runs off 2 AA batteries. You can also use it as an interface for your laptop if you change your mind and it comes bundles with Cubase LE.

I've had mine a while so i'm sure it's been superseded by something else now. But it may be an idea for you?

Good luck with your search!
