I'm very very interested in these as a compact sampler and sequencer for other MIDI gear.
But there are like 20 of them for sale on eBay right now which makes me a little wary.
I'm aware of the shitty pads on the original (blue) one.
I'm also aware of JJOS which turns it into a bit of a best.
It seems to tick all the boxes but why are so many people getting rid of them?

Yeah i've noticed the increase on ebay with these boxes. Was thinking bout going down the hardware sequencer/sampler route myself. Can't really comment though you have to own one for a while to findout the flaws yourself. Sometimes you can't really trust 100% ppl's reviews on gear as ppl use shit differently.
Maybe its just Christmas and ppl need the money

buy one for a good price, and you're not likely to lose more than a few $.
I guess its a case of people liking the idea and getting one, then finding out later they don't use it as much as batttery - so putting it aside, then xmas money issues come up, and out it goes.
great time to buy one, when they're in oversupply! you might even make some money if you decide its not for you early in the new year.

I reckon it'd mostly be because people think they need and MPC to make hip-hop, then get one and are too fucking stupid to learn how to use it.
Also, at first it feels very limiting compared to software.
But I love mine, had it for about 4 years now and would never get rid of it. I'd get a second hand blue+red one if its going to work out a lot cheaper, then just factor in the pad upgrade. Even if its only got the 16mb ram, you can use old laptop ram so it's mega cheap. And definately JJOS, I'd go straight to OS2XL and bypass all the debate on which OS is better.
Happy to answer any other Qs you got.

Cheers mate
i got a stock black one for a really good price. Found some laptop ram for 11 bucks. Turns out the sampling engine is a bit more limited than i was expecting. Sorta hoped to be able to assign the sliders to more fun stuff like sample start point. I haven't got jjos yet but i assume it will open up more options. I do really like it so far, especially running it alongside the (non UW) MD for some different sounds in my rhythm section. Haven't got into sequencing other gear with it yet but looking forward to it.

Yeah you can assign qlink to sample start on at least 1 of the JJOS's... I'm not sure about the newest one (2XL) though cause he changed how the Q-links work in that one. I'll have a look next time I fire it up.
You have to get the JJOSs... the AKAI OS is so limited that I don't think the MPC1k is worth the money with it. But play around a bit with the AKAI and then you'll appreciate the feature rich JJOS so much more!

Hard to tell with JJ's Engrish but there is a yes for "Start/End point of a sample in Q-Link NOTE ON" in the comparison list for JJOS2XL which I take to mean it does what I want. Looking at the many many other improvements makes it a no brainer. I'm going to install it now.

There is also the 'fact' that most people whom were MPC users have moved to Ableton these days, good thing for those of us that prefer hardware for 'that sort of thing' , as network:acid pointed out in his original post, the Ebay is flooding with them at quite reasonable prices.

As much as I love my mpc1000, I've just bought a Maschine. It will be phased out from my music making, but don't know if I'll sell it or keep it yet.
