Cheyne - from MOTUNATION.com a solution is to change your IEEE1394 controller driver to the legacy version as follows...

And it works, no noise....!

There was just one (slightly) worrying part of the driver install; a pop-up saying that MOTU Driver Install was Not Responding. But everything seems to be installed correctly and, as I say, I can now use my 8-Pre in Win 7.

Ehsan , your a star ...    That fix worked.  I had the loud BRRRRRRRR grinding away and I switched the host driver to the legacy version and in an instant to sound stopped and music came out of my speakers (itunes was playing) ..
