My own preference  - for what I have heard newly released this year -  is Porcupine Tree's The Incident.

You could choose any PT album from this decade and it would have some of the best ambient/rock/progressive/metal production around.
Steven Wilson (songwriter/vocalist/mixer) seems to have a gift for mixing, mastering and recording band instruments to the highest quality and beyond.
The dynamics on The Incident are noticably large and in tact, whilst each individual instrument includes all kinds of nuances. Even the very first cymbal crash on the opening track rings out in a totally natural and individualistic fashion, for a sustained period - in a way which most records fail to capture. (You kind of have to crank your stereo and hear it to comprehend this point.)

I recommend checking out the CD if you want to hear how records should sound in 2009.

Haha.. yeah it sometimes feels like that.

Hmmm... Newly released this year... Gee, I really need to start keeping up with what's new, 'cause I'm still catching up with stuff from the last however many years.

Keen to discover the Porcupine Tree though. Cheers for the heads up. ;)

Thanks for the replies guys - I might also add that a close number 2 for me this year is OSI's 'Blood'.

It is in a similar vein to Porcupine Tree; a blend of electronic, rock, ambience, metal and prog rock, all topped off with the lovely vocals of one Kevin Moore.

Coincidentally both the records I mentioned utilize the same drummer: Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree!!
