I'm in the market for a new laptop and i'm strongly considering a mac book pro.

I'm an ableton user and i'm curios as to what (if any) compatibility issues i'll run into when installing vst's on a mac.

I've never owned a mac before but as far as i know they are .dll free, which would be a problem for some of my free vst's that don't have a make specific installer?

Any input appreciated.

You need to find VSTi's and VST's that are Universal Binary compatible. Unfortunately, a lot of free VST's are not UB. There's actually a thread on here someone and one on ITM that has a list of free VST's and which platform they're compatible with.

I was lucky when i made the transition because i don't use a lot of VST's and the ones i do use are commercial hence have UB support.

Ah ok. So suppose i err... lost the cd key for one or two of my vsts, and i was (temporarily of course) using a less than legitimate version, anyone had any experience with this on a mac?

1 last thing, the plan at this stage will be to have Ableton on a macbook pro and then i'll have a pc running ableton also.

Assuming i have the same vst's on both machines am i likely to have much trouble opening files saved on the mac on the pc? And vice versa?

Save money by buying a pc laptop and use the one to buy ableton and a bunch of vsts. I'd only recommend the mac if you use Logic.
