Hmm - I wonder if the depth of the drum shell would have any effect on the sound  ::)

Haha I was actually talking about this today to a mate. I first discovered this by accident when I was about 9, by accidentally plugging my passive soundblaster pc speakers into the mic port on my soundcard. Playing with windows sound recorder I realised the left channel acted as a microphone. I been fuckin round with recording sound ever since. I wish I kept those speakers cause the tinny lo-fi sound I got from them was kinda cool.

Stav talks about this in an Audio Technology mag from last year, and goes through building one. The design was a bit different to this one from memory, but this seems to have nice detailed design steps. Very cool might have to build one.

I think I'd build a smaller one cause I won't be recording and kick drums, but it'd still be cool to use when you wanted a LP filter effect.

Very cool! :o

And given it's mounted in a drum shell, looks uncannily like an e-drum sensor/trigger

Just substitute the loudspeaker for a piezo, stick a cone-shaped piece of foam on top, use a mesh drum head and voila!

And how much do Roland charge again?  :-
