When you buy a second hand Pro Tools system you can transfer the registration of the hardware (including the associated PT software) into your name. The optional software and plug-ins can not be transferred officially. Most users just hand over the iLok and installers for the plug-ins but since it is not officially transferred, the new owner is not entitled to support or discounted upgrades for those products.
It would be a good idea to read this before buying a 2nd hand Pro Tools system.

Hey Anders/EM,
I'm selling a PTLE Rig with PTLE 8.0 software. What optional software are you referring to that cannot be officially transferred? Are you talking about the toolkits and AIR instruments? If so, then yeah, that sounds right.
If you're referring to a new PT8LE rig, then 'optional' software means something beyond a standard rig, yes? Software that you would have to pay extra for, yes?
I am of the understanding that I can sell my s/hand rig in box and it will be identical to a 'new' rig in box and the new owner will have the same 'legitimate' & 'official' ownership as they would if buying new. In other words, you can have exactly the same hardware and software as you would buy new - with 'official & legitimate' licences under the new owners name amd they will be fully entitled to updates and upgrades. The only difference would be the warranty period. I have mo warranty left on my rig.
You may be referring to the older 7.3/7.4 systems which came with a swag of plugins that are no longer included as part of PT8? I also have Melodyne Essential, Ableton Lite and Reason Adapted which came with my original 7.3 rig - all of which can be 'officially' transferred. I have since upgraded to PT8 and that is the software that will be transferred.
Anyway, do you percieve any differnce between my s/hand rig versus a new rig from the shop? What differences do you think there are?
Not trying to flog my rig to ya here, just trying to figure out what, if anything, is different from my s/hand rig versus what you get with a new product.
Cheers guys.

Hey EM (or anyone that's bought a new PTLE rig recently), did your new PTLE rig come with anything that requires an iLok?
If so, what was it?

Hi niktu,
This is the passage that answers your question...
The only software license that we transfer to the new owner is your Pro Tools license (including any upgrades you have bought for it). Plug-ins, factory bundles, toolkits, Ignition Packs or anything else optional or iLok authorized will not be transferred to the new owner in our registration system. Many users manually transfer the licenses on iLok.com (you will need to pay a fee to iLok for the service) or just hand over the iLok to the new owner. That way the new owner has the licenses and can use the software. The down side is they can not buy upgrades for them or get support on those optional products since they are not registered for them.

Registration of Plug-Ins and Optional Software Not Transferable
Digidesign will not transfer product registration for used plug-ins or other optional software from the original owner to another owner. Transfer of iLok authorizations by buyers and sellers can be done at www.iLok.com. Transfer of iLok licenses are between the individual parties. Digidesign will only register software purchased by the original owner, and only when purchased from an Authorized Digidesign Dealer.

Thanks Anders.
Yeah I was aware of that. I may have got myself confused by the posts. I thought there was an inference that if someone was buying a second hand Digi 003/PT8LE system, they might somehow be missing out on something. But what they miss out on, only relates to 'paid-extra', optional software - such as the Factory Bundle, Toolkits and AIR instruments.
At the end of the day, I have a secondhand Digi 003 Rack with PT8LE software for sale and it will be identical to the new product - as if purchased new - with the exception of the physical condition (if any difference at all) and the warranty period. The new owner will be legitimately entitled to all updates and upgrades as the new 'registered' owner.
I have 'optional' software such as toolkits and AIR Instruments that will be sold separately and these, I gather, might not be supported by Digidesign to the new owner.
Phew, glad we cleared that up.

So it's been nearly 12 months in the making... but after many jumped-through-hoopsand failed attempts at alternatives, I've finally orderd a my first PTLE System. To make things more exciting, I've even got some acoustic treatment on the way!
Its been a rough year for me, hence my absence, but this is a little present to myself to get me motivated again.
*leans back in arm chair, queues Sasha GU009, track 5 - yes, THAT track*
