Quick audio quiz - test your knowledge of audio awesome  :)

Post answers below and I'll mark them for you :)

1. Which mix is better?

- Mix A
- Mix B

2. There is a tenor saxophone in a recording. What do you do?

3. What is the difference between General MIDI (GM) and Specific MIDI (SM)?

4. What are the main instruments used in Drum n Bass?

5. Maths problem: A young rapper from Sydney, not long outta juvy, is working a long shift with RB, drinking 1 beer per hour with no food. At approximately 5 hours he begins to Fade. At 6 hours 30 minutes the rapper is hungry and drunk and he begins to Cross Fade.

a. How many hours before the rapper Fades Out?
b. What is the desired Beer (dB) level required to achieve Fade Out?
c. What solutions would you propose to Fade him back In?

6. Write a 50 word comparative review of the difference between Valve and MOS-FET MIDI interfaces

7. Draw a signal flow chart for the following equipment:
- Trumpet
- Marshall Amplifier
- Valve MIDI Interface
- Me
- Commodore 64
- Pro Tools Free
- Laser Harp
- SSL9000K

8. Conspiracy theorists claim that Auto-tune plug-ins are in fact a coded virus from outer space that is infecting RnB singers and turning them into an alien species. Which planet are they talking about? (choose one)

- Discworld
- Skaro (Dalek HQ)
- Kashyyyk (aka Wookie Planet C)

9. A quantitative measure of 'brightness' in sound can be derived from calculating its mean centre of energy in the frequency spectrum, known as the spectral centroid.

On the Spectrum below, circle the centroids for:

a. Cowbell
b. Lychee Martinis
c. Epic Trance

10. The amount of Ohms applied to an electrical current is known as the Ohm Force. Calculate the average Ohm Force of Cheese played per day of bigsummakandyhardcoredazeout.

1. A, 'cause everyone knows Class As are better.

2. Grow my hair past my shoulders, perm it, switch to singing, ballads, badly.

3. Specifically speaking, the former is more general than the latter.

4. Sampler... wait, you want more than one... ok, go with 'samplers'.

5. Too pissed to mix? Doesn't everyone use automation these days for exactly this reason?

6. Warm sounding, cold sounding, warm sounding, cold sounding, warm sounding, cold sounding, warm sounding, cold sounding, warm sounding, cold sounding, warm sounding, cold sounding, warm sounding, cold sounding, warm sounding, cold sounding, warm sounding, cold sounding, warm sounding, cold sounding, warm sounding, cold sounding, warm sounding.

7. I really should be in asleep right now, but I'm sure someone will dream up some most excellent funneh's from this one... especially as it's got you in the equation.

8. Yeah, what's with that. The kids at work listen to RnB all day, and I think, 'are people seriously still thrashing that plug-in?... And think it's still cool?'. Did Chris Brown attempt to sing all au natural to Rihanna before the Grammys this month and couldn't handle the truth in the look of disgust on her face? Um, you'll edit that out that when this goes to air, right?

9. Does this apply to minor keys also? Oh wait, I see what you did there... bastard!!!

10.

Sorry, what was the question again?

* takes a bow *

Spec your answers are the icing on the cake, 15/20 a distinction.

Answers 5 and 7 were pretty lazy I'm sorry.  :)

And everyone knows samplers are not an instrument.  :eatadick:

Sorry for my tardiness, Mr Boy... but some of us have day jobs n shite...

1. Mix B. This is because every great mastering artist and producer... and some more edumacated DJ's... knows that the B side is always the more rare and tasty mix. Often referred to as mix B, this makes mix B superior.

2. Check to see if the ugliest intern in America is sucking my knob.

3. Specific midi only works on specific devices and has much higher bandwidth. General midi allows more general devices to be patched but suffers from lower bandwidth... unless you use gold plated din plugs and 14 gauge OFC cable with triple neodynium shielding and a booster cell.

4. The main instruments are a monkey and a cymbal. The monkey writes the tune whilever you beat the cymbal.

5. a) Engineers don't get pissed... they get even.
:) That would depend on when the rider for the job expires
c) He never left. What are you suggesting? Fuckin' musos...

6. General concensus is that the advantage in rounding your digital signals to achieve more subtle midi transitions in valve technology is outweighed by the crisp efficiency of MOS-FET technology. Many musos' prefer Valve technology, however, as the valve glows and musos are a simple bunch often responding like moths.

7. --->---->>>>->>-->>>>>---<<>-.

8. Wookies? Darleks?? Discworld??? Fark man, give me some of the shite you're on. Everyone knows it's not an Alien conspiracy but a giant US Government coverup code named "Mowtown"... which is often incorrectly spelled by RnB singers (due to the general low average IQ) as "Motown", which only deepens the conspiracy and leads some people to involve Alien life form. Aliens are far to busy occupying Brintey Spears' gaping vaginal hole and ensuring Pop Music continues to erradicate music diversity and general good taste... similar to my posting on this forum  :eatadick:

9. The cowbell is that bit just below the V-neck, covering the Apple issued black skivvy. The Lychee Martini has already be consumed and is not visible without the use of high bandwidth X-ray. The epic trance is well out of the shot, thankfully making the image safe for work. Let's just say that if he uses the beer hand to wipe his arse, there's bound to be a smattering of epic trance under his nails.

10. Sorry, not enough info to make an accurate calculation. You need to specify the density and specific crappyness of the cheese output to finalise the calcs.

18/20 Jester is certified RBA :)

Question 7 was bit vague... your good ASCII skills were noted by the panel though

Well done

(I'll have to do a certificate)

Spectrum I'm awarding you an extra point for the video now I've watched it, and I take back what I said about samplers - if it weren't for preset loops and dodgy acapellas I wouldn't be writing anything myself...

16/20 new score for Spectrum entitles him to RBA certification
