Anyone using it ? With what ?
Iv attempted to use it with an external disk I use for various things. although its requesting a format before it can be used, and i dont want to format the whole thing purely for use with my single mac .
Im sure i Could partition it , but thought i might ask .. how is anyone else using it ?

You can partition it and just backup to any partition you want. I have a 1TB external hanging off my Airport Extreme which is partitioned into two 500GB drives, one of which is Time Machine, the other is just network storage. The initial backup takes farken ages (I had the external directly connected to the Mac via USB for that part. Over WiFi would have been ridiculously slow) but then it's practically invisible. I've never had to use it but I played around with it a bit, basically it shows you a finder for any given date so you can retrieve individual files or folders, or there's a button to revert back to the exact setup and files structure of any given day. So for example if you upgrade your DAW and it's screwed, just revert back to yesterday and it's like it never happened! Pretty cool, and very transparent. Only thing I find is that my internet slows down a bit when it's backing up obviously because there's a lot of data going over the wireless network. Wouldn't occur if the drive was directly connected to the Mac.

Now there's an idea.
Airport Extreme... is that what I've got?

Nah, just an Airport Express...
But wait, there's that USB port... will run a networked printer... what about a networked drive?
A question for the networked acid, I reckon?

Yea , i might go down the partitioned path , although no airport extreme here ...
Hmmm ..

Yep i back up one partition onto 1TB external drive too - gonna get an Extreme soon cos my phone WIFI don't like my older router so much. Time Machine's saved my bacon once or twice, but i'm waiting for the 1TB drive to go down... it's also got all my iTunes library on it - which *isn't* backed up heh

I didn't know for sure so I did some googling and it looks like no. Apple say no. There's a theory that it's just a regular printer port using a USB connector to save space.

Apple actually sell some thing called Time Capsule now which is basically an Airport Extreme with I think a 500GB or 1TB drive inside it. Something to think about if you're looking at the Extreme.
Even though it's slow, I like having my backup drive at the other end of the house from the studio.

I like the idea of a WIFI backupable HDD hidden somewhere, lest someone breaks into my house and grabs the stuff in plainsight

i can't wait to get my externals outta here as they're way noisier than my iMac... been looking at the WD Studio Pro II drives - FW800 Raided and apparently low power consumption (maybe quiet please? despite being 2 drives in one) - which means i can ditch my Lacie and send my USB out into the lounge where it gets eclipsed by the noise of my housmates PC

Yeah i've been using time machine since it came out and luckily haven't had to use it yet.
Every now and then it comes up with an error where time machine can't access the hard disk properly but after a reboot or remounting the drive it works again.
I have a partitioned 500GB with a 150 GB partition for time machine. It backs up my entire 120 GB drive on my macbook and stores daily backups for about a month. I suppose if you were moving around large files on a daily basis you would run out of space quicker. I am guessing.
