Check this out. A synth/sequencer based around an MS-10. I won't bother with all the specs, check the site.
It's basically 2 monosynths, which you can fully program, even some patchability. And then 4 slightly more basic synths to program the drum parts (I think its the same as the other one's, just without the release parameter).
There's a rom available for those inscrupulous types with the right gear ( I couldn't wait for it to hit Aus, its only just come out in Japan). Its fucking awesome. Can't wait to jam with my mates (can sync up to 8 wirelessly).
The sound is good, but slightly lofi because there is this highfrequency noise. Its not like white noise, more just a digital garbage sound, but I think it nearly adds to the charater of the thing. Hell it IS a toy. When I plugged it into my mixer and played it through speakers the sound actually blew me away, the bass was rich, and the drums punched through nicely.
In other news, someone has put together a site with all the free DS music apps listed: http://remaincalm.or...p/ds-music-apps
One of the most promising is the dsmcu - nds mix controller. Basically makes your DS a control surface for your DAW. Meters and faders and transport control. Wireless transport control could be very handy. Can set up ready to record my guitar with my DS on my knee and just tap record.

Check out the first tune I made, mucking around the other night. Just improvising alot, had about 5 patterns to base it around. Some cool bits in there, wish I had automated the volume on those 16th hats but. All sounds programmed from scratch. This is raw straight out of the DS.

One of the only things thats frustrating is you are limited to 16 steps, and that you can't use the Kaoss pads in song mode. I like that you can have a different synth program for each pattern though. And I like the limitations in a way, makes you be more creative with what you can do.

nice work megatroid.
yeah the lack of drum tweakability and the 16 step limit sucks but it's fun to push it and so what you can get out of it.
got it working on the sd adapter too so sync'd 2 together - it's awesome

The R4 doesn't look like much: just a generic Nintendo DS cart. What it does, however, causes Nintendo no small headache. The device, and others like it, bypasses the system's firmware and with the help of a micro SD card filled with... well, with whatever you want, the cart runs pirated games, emulators, or homebrew games. Nintendo has had enough, and AFP reports that the company is lawyering up with 54 other software companies to sue companies that make and distribute the device in Tokyo, using the Unfair Competition Prevention Law.

very cool man
can someone show me how much bass this thing can crank? some cool sounds, but to me personally still a little tinny without some depth from the lower notes

it gets low but pretty noisy
here's a jam with some patterns - levels are a bit all over the place but there's some good bits in there

well, I bought myself a DS lite (got the guitar hero bundle.. think I'll sell the game...) and a copy of this program for xmas....
had a proper play with it for the first time today.
I like what it can do, though the 1 bar sequence limitation is kinda frustrating!
would be nice to have 4 bars worth of steps for the sequence length.. helps keep things from getting too boring too fast (or sounding like techno) :-) plenty of modern things handle this - like for instance the korg electribes! apart from that though, it's not really lacking anything obvious. (ok, midi sync.. but that's to be expected seeing it has no MIDI ports..)
It doesn't sound really analogue, but the filter has a nice sweet spot as it closes down.
I like the drum synths for snare sounds and HH sounds and general percussion... not so keen on them for kicks.
I'm interested to see how much use I will get out of it.

the 1 bar sequence limit is for patterns you can link 16 bars up in song mode and do something a bit more musically sophisticated

I do like how you can link all 16 sequences from a single "file" up to 100 bars in song mode.... and it's something at least - or is there something extra in song mode I've missed?
thing is, I like working in multiple bar loops, and find it pretty frustrating I can't setup a 4 bar drum pattern, and just have it running, as I work out a 4 bar bassline, then have that going as I work out a 4 bar melody part..... much more intuitive for me than to have to work out things in 1 bar chunks, then string them together later.
More I play with it the more cool hidden things I discover with the drums - Today I discovered that you can melodically program the drum sounds, too... clicking on the drum track number in the basic drum sequencer gives you a proper full blown melody sequencer like the synths have. yay!

meh.
All the things they upgraded, and it's just 1 bar patterns, still? ....even though there's so much scope in the UI for implementing multiple bar patterns?
WHYYYYYYYY?
