I went to Hong Kong a few months ago and was looking through the multitude of DSLR's and accessories. To be honest it was overwhelming. I even saw DSLR's in various colors. I saw a white Pentax and it looked kinda kool. What wasn't kool was the pink one my girlfriend wanted to buy. Pink for gods sake. I'd love to hear your views on the EOS5D MKII.

Arrived today, quick test shoot, instantly startled by just how amazing 50mm @ f/2 looks on full-frame DSLR compared to 28mm @ f/2 on the smaller, crop sensor DSLR body (which is essentially the same focal length as far as the field of view is concerned). It's just an entire new realm of 3D-like images, with a very well defined shallow depth-of-field focus effect. After I agonised over the 'on paper' comparisons between the cheaper bodies (complete with desirable, more advanced features) plus a reasonable lens or two coming in at less than just the 5D MkII body alone, in the field, I can see now there's just no comparison between the crop and the full-sized sensor types.
And I finally have my wide angle back! This is gonna be fun.
What's not fun is the 60 or so boxes stacked up and consuming our entire dining room, still to sort plenty of crap, empty food pantries and kitchen drawers, sort clothes, all in time for removalists at midday tomorrow.

It does look very impressive on paper. How do the new Canon DSLR's compare to the Nikon's? I remember when Nikon's were King of the heap, has anything changed?

I still remember when 2 Mega pixel cameras were En vogue now we have 21 even 25 Mega pixel DSLR's. I wonder how high they will go and what kind of sensor technology we will see next?

Hmmm... The Nikon vs Canon debate is as old as, well since people have been debating Nikons vs Canons!
In many way's Nikons do lead, their lower-end bodies are more ergonomic to handle then the Canons, IMO.
It would seem also that Nikon got in early with sponsorships and business take ups, such as the Australian police force (as far as I know) that employs Nikon gear for their forensic field work.
Having said that, I've found Nikon to be unnecessarily complicated in some ways (stuff in menus that needs a button, stuff on buttons that would better off in a menu). And I was never a fan of Nikon's idea of hanging onto their legacy lens mount system meaning mechanical internal control for half their older lenses has been retained (compared to the electronic-controlled as part of Canon's 'EOS' design changeover in the late 1980s) so that half their bodies today are now incompatible with the older lenses so one is limited to manual focus with these lenses or a body upgrade to a high end model.
Continuing on with the sweeping generalisations....
Canon have the edge in telephoto lenses, Nikon superior in wider angle stuff.
Canon have lead the way with superior digital sensors, and getting cheaper models to market. Nikon is now neck and neck, overtaking where a particular Canon model might be getting long in the tooth, and Nikon is cheaper today for the entry level kit.
Nikon's core business is cameras and need to be good at it to survive, so they do. Canon flog off bubble jet printer ink at the price of liquid gold, and then some, so they can well afford the R & D for any camera stuff they could ever dream of, so they do.
But which is the most popular?
Well depends on who's sponsoring the event really...

(Big white lenses = Canon high-end telephoto range)
And here's Nikon's attempt...
http://imaging.nikon.../news090706.htm
...but won't look the least bit impressive.

Yeah, it's so mental really.
A 1920x1080 image (which equates to around 2 million pixels) yields an awesome standard photo. And doesn't 6 megapixels print A4 just fine?
And when I zoom into maximum magnification, the camera has already well out-resolved the quality of the lens, and so more pixels just means larger file sizes and nothing more gained.
It's actually been a breath of fresh air to see some models today, such as Canon's G series, start to go backwards in terms of megapixel counts, just to restore image quality (eg. low light sensitivity and image noise) that otherwise is a challenge when cramming a gazzilion light sensors into a pin-head.

As far as hybrids are concerned I prefer the aesthetics of the Nikon to the Canon. The Canon SX30IS looks like a bland stripped down DSLR unlike the Nikons and Fuji's that have a very stylish look to them.

Well my Fuji Finepix HS10 arrived today, but unfortunately I cannot open it until Christmas Day.

My girlfriend bought me a new coffee stove top perc and a whole bunch of coffee. Cant use it till Xmas but the whole house has the scent of the coffee.
I just bought an Alesis midiverb I
I found out you can load the midifx effects onto the eprom at the same time as the midiverb so you can have a 12bit FX + reverb in the one box

Don't you just love the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Johnson's should sell the smell as an air freshener, along with fresh baked bread and Porterhouse steak.
How are you finding the midiverb?

Re HS10, that's one crazy zoom range! 30x and starts out from something respectably wide to begin with. Trust the image stabilizers work well to keep a 30x image sitting static. Never a fan of electronic viewfinders, but no doubt this thing would take reasonable shots. How is it in low light / high ISO? I'm sitting outside in the sun right now and can barely see this laptop screen letalone study those ISO example pics. Fuji are a clever brand, while probably best known for their film era, they've also had some amazing well-professional cameras (think the GX617 for example), so it's no surprise they can develop some groundbreaking products.

Well, like I said it's hidden until Christmas. I believe it has double stabilization. The good thing about it is the fact that you can put stuff on it just like a DSLR, such as filters, proper flashguns with slave units, lens attachments (converters/ fish eye lenses) really can't wait to get my grubby hands on it on Saturday morning. Will let you know once I try it out.

Jester_fu what is the top speed of your Audi, what is the maximum at which you have taken her may I ask?

250km/h - you can pay coin and have the limiter removed to hit 280km/h. Fastest i've got it is about 195km/h and it gets there very quickly.

Spectrum: Been playing with the HS10 for a few days now and I have to say it is BEAUTIFUL. The low light photographs look awesome and as long as it is supported properly I don't feel the need to use a flash. The full HD (1920X1080P) movies are sublime. I'm still working through the settings as am not totally happy with the flash pics yet, too bright, some blooming. It feels so good in the hands (oooh er that sounds wrong) well balanced. The stabilizer works real well. Will post some pics later.
To Jester that sounds good. Need to take it to a track and give her a work out, warm her up (oooh er that sounds wrong-again) got 142 MPH out of my Cooper S and it felt soooo good.

Here are a few pics of it en situ plus a couple of shots I took using it.

It really is a beautiful camera, only downside is that focusing lags sometimes. Also had some problems getting it to focus on faces, may need to tweak it a bit.
Low light photography is unbelievably good.

some recent additions to the studio are a Roland TR-808 that was modded by Robin Whittle and currently being serviced by him and getting a 606 that I grabbed of Luka modded by exfade back - both are beasts of bass .
The 808 has some special mods that could make a great kraftwerk like quantised drummer style thing - all i need is some tin foil and 12 9v batteries
i'll post some pics when its back but there are some on my blog of both 808 and 606
