Self Promotion Website

19 posts in this topic

Gday Sound Punkers,

I was wanting to get some constructive feedback from all you composers, producers, musicians, dj's ect...

If there was a website that was purely for independent artist to sell there music, advertise, podcast, stream audio and video andĀ  basically self represent themselves in every way shape and form (a) what would you be willing to pay (if anything) for this service (:) what further features would you like to see.

This is a personal project of mine (Uni) and any constructive feedback would be great.

cheersĀ  ;)

First you need to get the reputation before you start charging - so I would start it for free. But limited use.. eg muso networking, demo's, streaming.. then you add the sell music feature as a secondary option - but have it advertised on the site. I would then set a goal of how many users you want on-board before you start charging - eg 5,000 users.. then run polls on how many users would actually use the sell functionality to get arse pluck numbers.

Then charge an annual fee of $5 + 5 or 10c commission off each song.. then you are working on the basis of people signing up because it is cheap and fair to the artist.

Say 1/2 of your users take on the sell functionality.. thats $12.5K straight up. that should more than cover setup costs - especially if you dev the site up yourself or have a business partner that will do it.

I would also include a charts system with a forum attached... so most listened too artist, most downloaded, highest selling, most popular song etc etc... the reason you add the forum so that fans and muso's can bitch about each other. Nothing attracts people to a website like a bit of biff / controversy etc. And music

Thats just how I would go about it anyway.

Additonally you would need to offer something other websites don't.. eg Myspace is a clusterfuck of a website which you can sell music, as is facebook to a lessor extent.. perhaps promo, business relationships with other website etc.

I don't know anything about reverbnation.com however.

Cheers Vagrant Producer

I appreciate your input and you have given me some interesting pathways to investigate further.

www.reverbnation.com is all of that ;)

Reverbnation.com does look like a great site but i don't think that there is any avenue to actually purchase and download music. Thank you for bringing this sight to my attention though.

i have a lot of choons in a folder on the SP server - if i link to em, i create a thread and link to that...

yeah but itd be great if someone had to make a thread for thier track, and uploads to some kind of html player at the top of the page (kinda like how ITM has the whatson ability)

said person can then post this html player code into other blogs etc that support html.. and it would have a soundpunk logo + link to the original forum thread..

using the embed from soundpunk and adding link like you do when you use flikr images

if we could embed a soundpunk logo with a clickable link on the player.. thatd be sweet..

would then need the a-ok from cheyne for this kind of promotion away from the website using his resources
