Sometime soon i want to get an audio interface so i can record guitar and stuff. I was having a look around and i noticed a lot of midi controllers are also audio interfaces. For example: http://www.m-audio.c...Ozone-main.html

So whats the go... any problem with having something like this as my primary sound card? If i was to get a seperate interface it'd just be something cheap anyway so i figure kill 2 birds with one stone.
Thanks for any help  :P

for the same price you could get a NI Kontrol.  I'm sure Ehsan would hook you up :(

and its red and shiny, how can you go wrong...

Ozone's $395 on the awave site.  tell 'em your a poor student I'm sure they'll look after u ;)
unbalanced inputs and outputs tho :)
an xlr might be good if you want to do some microphone recording but at least its got phantom power...

or tascam 122L's got a bunch of features for the price and would give you change for a controller that has all the buttons and keys you want.

or you could get a usb guitar :P

I've also got a firewire audiophile and a behringer nano I gotta get rid of.  you could have it for cheap.
or my BCD2K if your desperate :P

Written as Jed was writing his reply, and I see he has some good alternatives...

No obvious problems, assuming it does all you need it too.

First question, does that allow electric guitar to be hooked up to it, or is it built for line-level stuff? Some interfaces boast a selectable "Hi-Z" option on the line level inputs specifically for electric guitar use.

Something else to consider down the track when wishing to expand (more keys and/or more inputs), you'll probably have to upgrade both components. But hey, there may be a bigger all-in-one to go for when you're ready.

thanks for the replys guys, much appreciated!

The behringer ozone was just an example. Was really wondering generally if the cheaper usb keyboards with interfaces had shitty sound quality output or crappy recording quality through the line in. i'm pretty keen on an all in one unit and i wanted to start researching now so i'd know where to go when i've got more money post christmas/new years etc.

jed- cheers for the info, links. The NI Kontrol looks way too sexy for my bedroom, it'd probably keep me awake at night. The behringer usb guitar looks schweeet, something to consider down the road. Cheers for the generous offers too  :), if i change my mind i'll let you know, but my hearts pretty well set on an all in one unit.

Been sussing this bad boy - http://www.m-audio.c...iom25-main.html .... anyone with experience?

And everyone seems to mess their knickers over these - http://www.novationm...=promos#details (any chance those sustain or expression pedal 1/4 Jack Inputs can double as a vagina for my guitars penis?)

CT - I've read the x/k station is a weak hard synth... bullshit? you own one or played on one? if so any good?

TankF - head over to the Track Reviews Section

Xstation makes up 75% of my sounds - it really is a strong engine, very flexible ( 3 osc for start, plus FX (which you can also use on the audio input stage of the interface))

anyone who owns one of these puppies will tell ya how much they love it ;)

oh, and Roger Sanchez owns one...

i actually read that yesterday.... sounds like a bastard of a thing for someone performing live but i see it as only a minor fault for someone in my position.

have heard nothing but good reviews from my mates with xstations.
the xiosynth looks like it has the same features but with a few less knobs and more submenus to access the features.  is it an extra 400 for the extra knobs/sliders or am I missing something?
x-gator and appreg would be sweet. fx look pretty basic but look like they'd do the job.

checked out the xiosynth, looks well and sweet except for a lack of continuous rotarys... could be a pain in the arse to use as a midi controller, but hey, anything is better than the old touch pad for tweaking. That x-gator thing sounds fantastic. Looks like its the goods all round, probly get one or an axiom if im really poor.

cheers for the advice fellas! Will continue to research and i'll let you know what i end up with in the new year ;)
