Hi All,
just moved over to Logic, with the new pricing etc. it seemed like a good time to get rid of my xp partition on the MBP. I'm just wondering how others are finding this in terms of stability at the moment, as I'm not all that impressed. I've stripped back my OSX install and have basically nothing else on the drive but I still keep getting program freezes and have had a couple of system crashes as well. I figure that being a [sort of] first release of there may be a bug or two but at this stage I'm really not seeing the performance I was expecting. I haven't actually had a chance to spend a huge amount of time on it yet and it could very well be a config or training issue, but I'd be interested to hear how others are finding it so far....

Hmmmmm. Well Logic 7 used to crash occasionally - ie once every few weeks - but would usually save your work before giving up the ghost.
I haven't had as much of a play in Logic 8 as i'd have liked, but so far it's been fine.
The only thing that I would consider NOT stable is Mainstage - if you try to get too complex with too many input sources it just freaks out (on a G5, running Live at the same time for MIDI input). def not a recommended setup at this stage.

Bear in mind i tend to use mostly native Logic apps up til now - i'm sure excess 3rd party plugins make your system more prone to unexpected hangs etc.

that's the thing there ar eno other plugs installed at all, I'm running completely native at the moment. It ran ok last night, I've just been keeping the activity monitor going to keep an eye out for rogue processes.

strange... i would have thought it'd be just as stable on Intel / dual core.... i'm upgrading in a fortnight (yay Leopard) so i guess i'll have a bit more insight then...

So who has changed over??
As i am seriously considering getting Logic 8.
Are there any real issues with leopard??
Is it stable? - Re the issues brought up in this thread.
And mostly whats the learning curve going to be like coming from Cubase and Abletronz??
I know that there will be an intense "getting to know each other" phase, however i would like a rough idea if its going to be a major headfuck.
Cheers

seems to be smoothing out now, overloads once in a while but i've been fairly reckless running channels and fx, she takes most of it on the chin. still scratching the surface but its very intuitive so makes the learning curve smoother.

Actually i've had a few crashes lately, in Tiger. Always when maxing out the CPU, and mostly when a plugin was open.
Perhaps it's the slightly warmer weather, not sure.
I didn't have any probs in my beta of Leopard (I know, i'm bad) but haven't got the real deal yet. My external Firewire Audiophile card didn't get recognised, but drivers will start appearing for all kinds of interfaces now the OS is out.
there's an update for Mainstage which improves stability. Hopefully one for Logic on the way soon, tho it definitely fared better in stability stakes to begin with.

I know you love to crank it...
Could you give us an indication to the scale of your sessions (number of tracks/plugs/edit-density/etc.)?
Love to hear what sort of peformance you're able to extract from your system.
Cheers.

i'm goin the dual 2.8 shortly.... currently on a single G5 2GHz
i'll also be able to use FW800 for the first time ever... and hopefully use a Logic node between an Intel and Non-Intel mac....
so the before and after will be interesting for me, also. at the mo i can make a track with probably 30 logic instruments and 70-100 Logic Fx.... but a lot of these channels will need to be frozen. that's still a shitload of processing that my 2 year old box can do with the Logic synths.
I've got a track underway at home, none of the channels frozen (can't freeze sidechained tracks and i'm too lazy to route them to busses for their compression) - but it's pretty much hit its limit as far as my CPU is concerned. I'll post you some pics and a sample of the track tonight, cos i know you love lookin at screens full of plugins Spec

So how is everyone progressing now that this thread has a bit of mileage on it?
Looks like it will be this or Cubase sometime in the next month or 2...

Well, I have never had stability issues with it.
It gets an A+ from me for audio quality and editing and advanced MIDI sorcery, but for basic MIDI sequencing, I much prefer to use Live which is so much simpler and more direct. Logic is equally arcane and intuitive, depending on what you want to do.
The Logic plugins, all of the synths, samplers and FX, are amazing.

yep - tis dope, i'm gettin nice polished sounds out of the default synths now i've had a lot of time to play with them.
I don't use the default mastering plugs as much any more, I find Ozone to be less dirty when you ramp it up, but otherwise - i couldn't recommend it any higher.
stability wise, no probs, hasn't crashed on me in months - it still tends to max out one core faster than the other but that first core still gives you more than enough grunt to get a killer track done.
