hey
just something i've always wondered about ...
Say the latency of my system is about 10ms, and im using an external synth to record a part. When i record the audio from the synth (or just play it normally), it has about 10ms delay. Now, normally this doesnt matter too much, but when im doing something that requires tight timing like 16th basslines at 145bpm, it makes it hard to work with.
what i do at the mo is record my bassline to a loop, zoom in and chop off the 10ms or so of silence, then increase the length of the loop so it fits at a bar bounday, which isn't particularly the most convenient thing, especially if i want to tweak the bass sound.
is there anything i can do about this? does using the time slider on the audio track work? i need to get it really tight though, maybe i should try the time slider on the midi track thats sending the bass notes.

ok, i thought about adjust the midi timing as i was writing that post and just did a little experiment. it seems to work ok at -30ms.
now i'm idly wondering: if my asio config says latency is ~10ms, why do i need to make the midi notes -30ms to compensate? a 10 + 10 ms round trip? + another 10ms somewhere?

does your audio card allow you to direct monitor? record using direct monitoring you won't hear any latency at all ... midi playback from an external synth shouldn't introduce THAT much latency either .. pre rolling will help can't help you with your mystery 10 ms though

hmm, yeah i think it does. it's an fa-66 which is what you have i think too? there's the headphone jack?
the synth runs through a mackie before going to the fa-66, maybe that's where it's coming from. oh well, setting the midi offset will do for now.
