seriously people.. this is one of my weakpoints.. soundcards..
someone once told me to "save money and go with the mixers with the soundcard" and i forgot who.. but on djforums.. this dood said.. the soundcards in the mixers are not built to quality or some @#$% like that..
Me gets confused with all this audio interface..
whats the difference lets say... with a 1 grand MOTU sc.. and a 1 grand Alesis or soundcraft mixer with firewire sc...???

Let's start with the fact you don't get anything like the same number of OUTPUTS buying a soundcard/mixer as you do a dedicated soundcard. You'll also find that for about 1k, you'll not get any sort of inputs in line with the Motu.
BUT; horses for courses. There's plenty of nice sounding mixers with digital recording onboard - like the Mackie Onyx. Not cheap, but nice mic pre's, and a nice soundcard to boot.
To summarise - the dood on DJforums must have been a DJ. Let this be a lesson never to listen to anything a DJ says about sound, as they have absolutely no idea. Ever. Period. No discussion.
DJ's + Sound = :pissingmonkey:
;D
Sorry... had to be done. The only way to get a cheap soundcard or cheap quality about I/O on a mixer is to BUY a cheapy. Let's just say you can get much more I/O for less money buying a dedicated soundcard. You'll also find the decent entry level desks with audio interface inbuilt start around $2k, which is the premium end of a stand alone soundcard. If you don't need good mic pre's and outboard EQ etc, buy a good soundcard like Motu, RME, PreSonus (etc.) with a built in DSP mixer (that is - a mixer they implement in software using the DSP chip that turns the audio into digital) and run all of your outboard synths etc. straight into the soundcard.

Yeah... that's in US Dollars. $1445 * 1.17 = $1700AUD (approx) + freight + 10% GST and you're well on the way to 2k
You can get a Motu Ultralite for around the $850 mark IN Australia if you know where to look and how to haggle. The digital stages in the Mackie and the Motu would be pretty much on par for quality and reliability. You get 16 inputs and 2 outputs with the Mackie. With the Motu, you get 10 inputs and 10 outputs.
It really depends on what you're running - a whole lot of hardware and a little software/VSTi's (like me
) or a whole lotta VSTi's and dreams of a hardware synth or 2 (like a lot of people these days). If you're setup is the later, then i wouldn't personally be considering a Motu or a multi channel desk. I'd head straight to a basic presonus card... and use it for good quality main outputs. Hell - even a Terratec Producer 24 (on firewire for later mobility).
If you've got quite a few bits of kit 'outside' the PC/Mac box... then you might want to think of a desk and/or a multi I/O soundcard.

its $1445 at awave in melb.... aus dollars.
See the thing is.. next year I'll have enough cash to buy (software route)KORE+Komplete or go the hardware route...and a mixer/soundcard..
So lets say If i went the software route.. then a basic soundcard would do? but if i went the hardware way.. with like 2 hardware synths or something along those lines.. then a mixer/soundcard would be my best bet?
is that what you meant in your last para.
Cheers

Yep, that's what i meant by the last para.
Man, that is WELL cheap for an Onyx mixer. I'm still gobsmacked.
I hope nothing i've posted sounds anit buying software/VSTi's or hardware, for that matter. It's a very personal thing which route you go... and either way you can still make rockin' tunes. Talk to eshan about Kore - he's got one (+ works for the distributor
) and absolutely seems to rate it. Good person to see what the in's and out's are

Persian, or just plain mad?

No really. Thanks for asking. My dad (also Ehsan ;D) is a Palestinian. Go that's even worse than saying you're Iranian these days eh?
Happy to talk Kore. It's fun! And great for those of us who will NEVER be bothered mapping out a controller to Cubase VSTs cos its a pain in the ass!
