Hey all, just to let you know I blindly updated to OS10.4.10 (thanks autoupdater) and now the latest M-Audio firewire driver is annoyingly temperamental. Every day or two my Firewire Solo disconnects itself and the control panel software tells me to shut down and plug it in. It even happens mid session, say flipping between iTunes and Quicktime or any non-Pro Tools app.

I did all the standard stuff after the update, uninstalled old drivers, trashed prefs, downloaded and installed new drivers etc etc.

I have to shut down, pull out the lead, reconnect and power up.  :bang: :bang: :bang:

I'd be going back to 10.4.9 if I could, but now just have to wait for an M-Audio update I guess.

10.4.10 - I'd say don't bother fellow Maccies.

A perfect example of why NEVER to have auto-updates selected... :P

Hey, that's pretty wierd, and worrying.

There's been reports about issues with the auto-update mechanism. Digidesign are officialy recommending people d/l the updates themselves from Apple's sites at the moment, rather than use auto-update, for use with Pro Tools. Not sure the exact reasoning behind it.

My flakey iBook is stuck on 10.3.5 on a cramped emergency partition, and unable to go anywhere with OS updates at the moment. It took me more than a day of try-after-try-after-try to factory install the main partition from the original disks and the stupid thing bails out with critical errors. I've given up with it now. I can't fault the hard drive, yet the directories are continually being corrupted, not to mention the whole thing shutting down to a red, blue, green, then grey screen, fans blazing, at the drop of a hat.

When's my replacement arriving again. :P

And thanks for the heads-up on 10.4.10

I'd imagine something to do with users not installing OS updates before Digi have cleared them for use and clogging Digi with tech support queries it can't answer.

Bummer about your ibook dude, sounds critical. I guess it highlights one of the gambles we take with a fully proprietary hardware/software combo. When it works well it's easy and slick. But when it fails it seems to fail utterly. Here's hoping replacement comes soon.

In my own case autoupdate now getting disabled. No biggie to look for security, QT, Safari and iTunes updates manually. (Well, slightly but I'll live)

That's a fair point. This, I believe, is something that goes deeper pointing to an issue with Apple's auto-update system failing to install/commission the updated files properly. And Apple are apparently working on a fix as we speak.

I'm hoping to post a link to more info here, only my older version of Safari won't open the links to check I've got the right page...

Click the first link titled "Pro Tools 7.x won't launch after updating Mac OS X to 10.4.9, the icon ..." from the FAQs at the Pro Tools LE 7.1.3 Mac Support page:
http://www.digidesig...8&categoryid=34

Does that shed any light?

Maybe I've misunderstood what auto-update is. So it's completely automatic? I just use the Software Update which tells me every now and then what's available for download, which I can then "quit" or "install items". I guess that's not auto-update? A fully automated update would be dangerous. Didn't an old iTunes update physically destory people's hard drive? Where do you access this auto-update option?

Re point 2 first, yes I was lazy with my terminology, I meant Software Update which I have scheduled to weekly. Yes I could uncheck the OS update as well and leave others to go through, in the 10.4.10 update I was lazy and just hit go without really thinking.

Re the 2nd point, thanks for the info I frankly never knew, as every update I've ever run before this was so transparent I didn't need to look! I purchased at 10.4.8, and when I did the 10.4.9 update my PT and M-Audio were fine, then again MP runs a different audio engine to HD and LE.

Got me inspired to run the 10.4.10 combo update back over the top of my current system, as Digi recommends for a 10.4.9 mac that's been autoupdated, and see if it fixes the M-Audio bug. Will keep posted as to results.

Fuck, you're fussy. I'd settle for a Spectrum (ZX80, not internerd :P)
