so, i'm using ableton 5, just wondering how i can assign different vocal snippets to my midi keyboard...  basically i want to chop up a vocal and have them assigned to my pads so i can record a fucked up kind of vocal line

EDIT: Moved to Ableton forum, edited title to match content. - Spectrum

Nothing wrong with the n00b forum, however a great question for the Ableton forum's resources. :D

Ok well your running live 5

so no sampler yet for you, however this could be done a number of ways in ableton

Judgeing by yyour question I will assume your not running battery or any other 3rd party sampler plug in , which if you were using you could slice and map out different samples to different pads / keys

in ableton without sampler and nothing but native plugs, i guess i would make all my slices in sound forge or even ableton, then in session view stick a snippet in say row 1 of audio track 1

and just follow down filling all your snippets into session slots (make sure all on the same track)

now go up to the trigger quantization (sorry thats what i call it)  but where you choose how the next clip triggers wether it be 1 bar 1/4 bar etc.. its top centre next to teh transport controls

change that to none or whatever they call 'no setting'  and change it to that,

hit midi assign key, (top right) and then press first key on keyboard you wanna assign, then the play triangle on the 1st clip you created

anmd do that all the way down mapping your samples to keys, because you have turned off the trigger quantization you should in theory be able to jam away triggering one clip after another happily,  using this method you will find each clip cuts off the next if you wanted to have them not cut each others audio off you woudl assign across a number of tracks

THEN THEIR IS THE EASIEST WAY I JUST FARKING THOUGHT OF, stick your snippets in an impulse machine on a midi track and play the samples like drums, by default impulse maps its 6 slots across the first 6 keys starting at C1

then you get all the extra tweakability that comes with each slot in impulse, plus once you have the pattern played in theres all that fun to be had with swapping stuff around, ;

like filling all the slots with Mr.T one shots - hours of farking fun

hope i helped

ah, rad.  so ideally you'd recommend getting a sampler plugin like battery?

i've only really just started with ableton so havent really sought out any third party plugins.

yeah, the impulse thing sounds good, though i'm not sure how to put my own samples in one

Man the session view with a few keys assigned to one channel with various shots should be all you need... unless you really want the extra features of a sampler VSTi

i might investigate the sampler.

i'm a hip hop kid and have already been doing a lot of the cut and paste type stuff, so i imagine a sampler could come in handy.

any recommendations on which one to get?

haven't had a chance to try the impulse machine idea yet

this may be of use to you mate:

get yourself "audacity" which is a free program here

load the sample you want to chop up or whatever in audacity, then to get the slice you want all you have to do is highlight the slice you want, then go file --> export slice as wav and voila you have your slice. pretty fast to chop things up (i have just been doing it with an acapella).

i just loaded the slices into redrum and away i went, but you should be able to do the same thing with impulse :(

not sure if you're interested at all but this is a little loop i made and shortened the hits (mp3): here :)

lol well i thought i would give it a crack, allah Dogz on acid, however I am thinking i should take it down so as not to encourage anyone else

for example dogz on acid is out of control, and hard to read at times, however i think it would be cool to be allowed a certain space, but nothing taking up more than say that pic above maybe shrunk to 2/3 of that size?

dont know - you guys are the mods ;)

Yeah DOA looks like shit. ;D In fact, most do, I reckon... unless, as you say, they're limited by size. While I'm not making the authoritive word here, I prefer smaller, banner like images. 'Course yours wouldn't look as good if it were smaller. ;)

Perhaps shoot Cheyne a PM and get his thoughts?

Oh, and I want a Voyager. Might just settle on a Phatty. ;)

How is the voyager Wuko?

And yeah - I woulda thought impulse would be the ticket. Even just loop the snips as clips and drop the clips into impulse. I think you can do that. Neato!

^^ if the loop points are actually 'set' yep will work

only takes ctr-j  to consolidate tho, and i think may save you some space

but yeah same deal loop snippet, consolodate load into impulse - yay!

No need to soundforge/audacity/etc, gus. Can do it all in Abes.

Drag the vox sample into the arrangement view. Use the mouse (or keyboard) to highlight the section of the sample/loop that you wish to set to a key. Use zoom to give you more accurate start and end points of the selection). Then I think the keyboard shortcut is Control-E to split the audio at that point. Might need to check the menu or manual for that, but you basically splice the sample at the start and finish of the selection area.

From there you can drag the new slices into an Impulse slot as outlined above, or else back into clip slots in a channel in the session view (by dragging over the session tag on the right side of the screen, towards the top), also as outlined above.

(I use this method all the time for grabbing a hit from a cool drum loop, dumping into Impulse.)

If you go the clip slot option, I think there’s a slightly more useful way than the one offered here. You still need to map each clip to a key on your controller. Control M to go to midi map mode, then click the clip launch arrow thingy followed by the key on your keyboard. Do for all clips, then Ctrl-M to get out of midi map mode.

But instead of changing the Global Trigger Launch Quantize option (which effects ALL of the clips in the session view, not just the slices of your sample), try going through each clip you’ve created, clicking (or maybe double click) on each clip, and change the clip launch options (bottom left corner) to “none” (the default would be ”Global”). This allows all the drum loops and other musical stuff to remain locked to the Global quanitze - i.e doens't matter when triggered, they start on start of next bar - while the slice clips are triggered as you press the keys.

Set monitoring to on for that channel with all the clips in it, with the control source set your midi controller, and bash away on the keys.

Note: the clips method above only allows one of these samples at a time, no overlap. To have more than one playing at a time, either use the Impulse method, or spread the clips across a few different channels and arm them all to monitor on.

Have fun.

You can also turn on legato mode for the clips in session view, which will trigger the next clip from where the last clip left off
better for beats and loops but will give some interesting results for vocal samples.
