Using abelton 5, and the only compressors I have are the 2 that come with the software, which don't allow you to sidechain the bassline with a kick etc.
How do you guys set up side chains in abelton? What plugins do you use?

Check out www.abletonguru.com and click on the tutorials link. Has you tube embedded tutes on sidechaining in ableton (pretty well done too) and also a link to some freeware compressors by a developer out of Japan.
Couldn't find sidekick but didn't spend much time.... Link anyone??

tc native bundle over here
or if you want to have some real control... clip volume envelopes on the bass, you can really shape it that way (trick props must go to Tim Allan

of course you can manually set an envelope...but hey, if you can have some plugins ducking your bass, why should i take the time to put "duck for duck" (donald duck? entenhausen?)

you cant understand why being able to shape the curve / reaction of the ducking (despite being the longer way of doing things) is probably better?
really?

Ratio, attack, decay and knee controls effectively offer the same control just without the visuals.

^^ true
but then you'd be using your ears??
i have 'personnally' just had better results with volume evelopes - each to their own tho
just offering up a different method of doing things in ableton 8)

luko...of course it's "better" to have the total controll over everything...but man, i'm a damn lasy bone and so yes, i let my machine do it for me!
but it's nice to have the possibility to do it manually....you could do it also in cubase by hand...but i hate to manipulate thousands of lines and dots....

Comparing volume automation to true sidechain compression is like some analogy i cant think of. Wouldn't you say theres a different between volume attenuation and compression?
