This one may appear quite random, and sadly it's one of the very few of my Future Music articles I ended up receiving presented back to me in a read-to-print electronic PDF. In hindsight, I wish I'd had them all saved this way (seeing that my hard drive with the original raw copy in Word has since died while in storage, and so I really only have my the original magazines locked up away safely refer back to. I'm planning to start scanning/uploading these later this year).

Anyway, this is just Part 4 (of a 5-part series) about pulling a studio together from scratch, so to speak. This episode discusses studio furniture, wiring things up, and making considerations towards room acoustics.

Not sure which FM issue it appeared in (around FM140, I think), but it's around 5 years old now.

All comments welcome. ;)

Thanks for the kind words, Cheyne. And you can put your shirt back on! haha..  :(

It was definitely a fun few years working with the FM team.

Got a 2-part monitoring article I'll upload next, ripped from the web, and unfortunately no pictures (just text), so may not provide the same level of eye-candy to support the words... see what you think.

awesome.

what is it with you guys uploading articles that are actually interesting and worth reading?

thanks as per usual, and i was also wondering if i could run something past you guys: i'm about to reconfigure my home studio, and was thinking of making a scale image or something of my room and hopefully listening to advice you guys have for me. actually i guess in a way it will be you guys setting up my home studio thingy. no worries either way thought i'd ask tho! :D

cheers as per usual

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words and request for feedback on the arrangement of your own studio rigs. Top idea!

Feel free to go ahead and start a new thread (graphics totally optional - I have an active imagination :P ), and give us a rundown of:

  • what you've got
  • what you're wishing to achieve,
  • And (and this is the important part), what things you've already considered towards your gear selection, ergonomics and acoustics for your particular situation.

While I'm more than happy to answer, "Here's my lego, how should I build it" posts, I much prefer getting to know your methodology and where you're coming from so I can learn something along the way too. You'll find it'll assist in your own better understanding of why things are the way they are.

Cheers guys. :D

OK... i'll take you up on this one...

I've got a 32channel 8 bus desk with 6 auxiliaries all set up as pre fade, post EQ. Currently, all groups route to the 828MkII, and i use the internal DSP mixer for mixdowns. I've got a 24 way patch bay (deadringer Ultraptch Pro) with the only 'normalised' channels on it being for the inserts... of which i have 4 connected. The desk has 32 tape out's, and matching tape in's.

How can i get more than 10 i/o into my Motu without buying another motu? ;D

:-[ Haha.. thanks but I think we're all ordinary hacks in some way or another... and every now and then one of cranks out the odd extraordinary bit of work. ;)

Lovin' the Bubble & Squeak sound, mate. And if our plans go to, er plan, we'll get ourselves to Melbourne for longer than a single weekend (but hey, the beer and pizza was great, eh Jester?) and will make a point to see you guys rip out a live set. Now that sort of stuff rocks my world!

Cheers mate.  :cans:

Heya Trackhouse1! Where'd ya find Part5? Love to see that again. :D

As for the rest, I'm hoping to reunite with them @ Easter (just a few weeks away), then work out how to ship them across the country.

There's plenty of stuff I want to read through again... like a DIY Progressive... written years before the mau5es genericified it. Also a DIY Prodigy, who are now back in the spotlight again. Oh, and that DIY Orbital that Darko wanted to check out.

All up, there's around 60 bits and pieces I can possibly upload assuming the Future Publishing narks don't come knocking... but I think I remember there being just a 2 year exclusivity clause.

Oh, and I'll then need a scanner... and a Mac Book Pro that just works. :(

^Yar... choice... 'ceptin it's a analogue desk that does all tha mixins. I tried one of them "ADAT to 6.5mm" jack adapters, but it sounds like the interwebs is escaping through my hi-fi stereo speakas.

Speaking of which, who do ADAT-Analog boxes?

RME used to be the kings, now Mackie do a version.

Who else? Presonus?
