For anyone following - skta2 solved his own problem by changing Firewire PCI cards.

and thats usually the problem with these

Best practice is to see if you have the recommended firewire for the soundcard installed before purchase of said soundcard - most of the time this info will be on the box, or the brands website

Yay! happy ending

Yeah the firewire port was generally the root of my problem too, however, my firewire card was sharing an IRQ with a USB port and seemed to be causing a fair bit of hassel. I also, just swapped my card into different slots and ensured it had its own IRQ, reinstalled software etc then bingo.

FWIW - I found a bit of info on people who claimed that AVG and various other protection software would block incoming data via the firewire port under certain circumstances. I didnt have that problem, at least i didnt change any settings to get my unit to work, but its worth looking inot if you have prolonged troubles.

Anyway, stoked you got it sorted skat2!

I do music tech reviews for street press and one of this week's gadgets was the Focusrite Saffire. I have to say it was an instant install on my Asus M6R notebook that i use as a test machine, though i havent tried it on the Macbook or tower PC yet. I just used my own 4-pin Firewire cable and a power supply. For the sake of reviews, installation issues are an issue of computing platform, and not the hardware.

In terms of the interface itself, im quite impressed so far. The pre-amps sound nice and having the space between knobs and dual headphone outputs makes my Ultralite look tiny and tricky by comparison. Hoping to do some more acoustic guitar recording tests on it shortly, and trying not to want to buy it myself!

What saffire are you testing?

Re the install, from research, the problems were usually in PC's while installing the rack version (which would probably point at dodgy firewire PCi cards - I had issues with mine - and possibly firmware issues). Good that you got yours going with out a hickup though!

You're right though, they are great units, sound pretty nice and are easy to function.

There should be a web version of the original print review... here we go:

http://www.timeoff.c...dvice&Itemid=83

Tested on a Macbook, Asus M6R and PC tower (which i mostly use for reviewing stuff and a media box). We had a mic to review that week too so i got a guitarist mate over to record some accoustic ideas on a revamp of a track from our old live set and it went pretty seamless. As you say CT, its pretty crazy how much connectivity theyve run with, which of course lets manufacturers make those "oh its got a million inputs and a million outputs" claims, whilst whispering "if you use ADAT" :(

You're at Ellaways arent you CT? Or was? What interface did you settle on yourself?

yeah i'm thinking on a pro40 io as my next interface either that or a motu UL will roughly be the same cost

Hey could you tell me what brand firewire card you are using. I have been going crazy trying to get some kind of support with my saffire pro 26.
