Don't forget about the Instrument plug-ins in Pro Tools 8! You only really need to buy the extra AIR plugs if you want more options in a specific area... Or if you just want to play with Transfuser.

Xpand2!
Structure Free
Vacuum
MiniGrand
DB-33
BOOM
BFD (for those who missed out on the Ignition Pack)
http://www.digidesig...19&itemid=35972

Are all free in Pro Tools 8. I write all of my tracks with these plugs (Xpand2! mainly) then just put other plugs in to replace Xpand2! sounds later if I think it needs it.

Ah, I missed the fact that those ain't AIR. But what is AIR anyway? It's all still Digidesign. ;)

So I guess I need to grab PT8 then for the extra instruments, including BFD lite (which I assume must have a reasonably cheap upgrade path)?

The new instruments:
Xpand2!
Structure Free
Vacuum
MiniGrand
DB-33
BOOM

and the new plug-ins:
AIR Chorus
AIR Distortion
AIR Dynamic Delay
AIR Enhancer
AIR Ensemble
AIR Filter Gate
AIR Flanger
AIR Frequency Shifter
AIR FuzzWah
AIR KillEQ
AIR Lo-Fi
AIR MultiChorus
AIR Multi-Delay
AIR Nonlinear Reverb
AIR Phaser
AIR Reverb
AIR Spring Reverb
AIR StereoWidth
AIR Talkbox
AIR Vintage Filter

...are all developed by AIR.

AIR stands for Advance Instrument Research and are the virtual instrument department at Digidesign. All of these plugs are built by the same guys so they're just like the others just FREE!

There are quite a few plugs to wade through so start with "filter gate". Thats my go-to plug for textures, so fast and easy.

@em - How did you go getting Pro Tools 8 going with your 003?

I still have to download the update for that, but that's the least of my worries at the moment...

I said earlier that the pc would be the problem and the mac would be easy. Forget I said that. I have only just switched on the g5 for the first time, it belonged to a network at uni and it still seems to be part of the network...the computer ID is named student 05767 (or whatever the number is). however, when u switch it on it takes you straight to the desktop without the optional log in choices. Then every time I try to double click on the install files, it says in this really creepy font 'PTLE_7.4.2.mpkg doesn't understand the <<event sysorpth>> message'. There are only a couple of entries on the net about it, one claimed it was the firewall settings but when i try to allow ports it just says i'm not allowed... which is what makes me think that it is still under another administrator that doesn't allow me access. I think maybe that it's still logging me in as a student and won't let me install anything because i don't have the authority. But really, I wouldn't know. I'm not really a mac person yet. I thought I'd put it to you guys before transfering all the plugs back to the mac and playing the guessing game again. And now my CD tower just fell over.

May somebody please help me? :dead:

Do you have the original OSX install CDs?

Thinking the best thing for it would be to save any stuff you want to keep, then perform a fresh install: insert the CD, hold "C" on boot-up, follow the prompts, and "Welcome to OSX in 50 different languages!".

So it's a G5 tower, eh?

I've got a boxed version of Tiger (10.4) that runs on the PowerPC G4 iBooks, so presumably it'll work on the G5 tower? I don't need it anymore since both our iBooks have bitten the dust, and I'm now running a Intel-based Mac Book Pro.

http://en.wikipedia..../Mac_OS_X_v10.4

Let me know if you're interested and I can post it to you.

Actually, just had a thought, you're gonna need Leopard to run PT8 anyway, so best shell up up for that (AUD $158)
http://store.apple.c...?mco=NDcwNTIxMA

But wait, are the G5s supported?

Minimum System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
512MB of physical RAM
DVD drive for installation

Yeah yeah, it'll be fine. ;)

Thanks dude ;)

Yeah I've just been kind of winging it hoping that i can get away with it for now without an upgrade, i've been in 2 minds about whether to go to PT8 immediately.

Hey em if you don't want this, I might pm Spectrum. I have a G4 tower at home with 10.3 I want to update. My own 10.4 install disk is for Intel/Imac only  ;) Also if you go to the Apple site to download 10.4 it directs you to the Apple store, but it is obviously no longer a stock item. Doh!

Yeah, cool RB, just PM your address again if you could. And feel free to hang on to it, and I give you a shout if I ever need it again, but I can't see me needing it anytime soon.

And Em, 8GB eh? Ouch! I remember some commotion re d/l times, but didn't realise it was the sheer size that was the issue. Suggest you order the discs then (around $15) to be be sent out. Always handy having them for future re-installs of necessary too.

Hi All, just to clarify.

The PTLE8 download it about 4gig for each platform (mac or PC). Plus another 1.5 gig per platform for BFD, Melodyne and Torq LE. PLUS another 4 gig for the audio loops and samples that are included, the loops are plain WAVs so the same files work on Mac and PC. These are all in separate files to aid downloading.

You can order installer DVDs for AUD$59.95 but you have to contact tech support for that (www.digidesign.com/tsr). The package contains 2 dual platform DVDs totaling 12 gig of data including all of the above plus the optional installers for stuff like documentation, MP3 Option, Factory Bundles etc...

So I took the plunge today... and have just been hit with the reality of how BIG these files are! Crap! ;D

I could care less re the loops, but there's another 3GB for the Music Production Toolkit... so still 7 or so frickn' gigabytes! :wtf:

Off to check the ISP's d/l limits...
