hey there

...

.... Anyway i thought ide give it a go so i picked up and awesome edition of computer music, "Essential Guide to Ableton Live" its absolutely awesome. It doesnt go TOO in depth with djing, but enough to start someone off.

i was just wondering if any1 knows a good site or two, or specific sites or threads that are like tutorials, cause i wouldnt mind having a variety of sources to begin djing with ableton.

PS: ive googled, ive found some but they are either really really basic, or the file has expired

help would be appreciated, even your little guides to djing and stuff

Where i stand:

Im at the point where i can warp a track if i must. (use it for production but not sure in the Djing sence)

familiar with live in the production sence (using both views, sampler, operator, simpler, effects etc etc)

... i actually thought hard whether i should give it a go, and i thought i would, not to jump in the bandwagon (dont noe if other countries use that expression), but to see if it suits me, while using other things

so yeah again, link, comments, your own guides and experiences would be useful to me, and hopefully to anyone out there who is interested in live's capabilities..

if you want to, you can PM me

As far as im concerned ,  DJ'ing with ableton is its more basic form ...  warping the tracks and working them into together is a simple task , and I dont think theres too much out there on it because once you start doing that , the next steps up are really more complex trigger sampling and effects ...

I quickly ditched the whole time stretch DJ thing , and before i knew it I had my tracks cut up into a million pieces and I was triggering them like a crack craving cowboy on my trigger finger and x-station  in sync with my own beats and sync'd  Electribe ...

The track wasnt being played back in any where near its original form , and it was basically remixing on the fly , which id probably more call  "Playing Live" than simply DJ'ing ...

Correct me if im wrong ....

The ableton live forums are a good resource for this stuff ... I suggest you check them out ....

Or maybe answer this ,  what exactly is it you envisage your self doing in live ?? .. simply playing other peoples tracks back to back ?  or cutting them to pieces and reworking them on the fly ?

good question you asked in your last sentence

Well basically best of boths worlds, i want to be able to DJ other peoples tracks, the ones i like and will never change, and songs that i WOULD like if there was a touch of this or a touch of that or if it was like this or if it was like that (which i can do ofcourse using live)

so basically it is essentially for Djing, but with a touch of reworking. If im going to completely remix it, then i would do it beforehand and then play it, and if i would then later on want to play actually live, as in reworking a song live, then i would do so. But for now Djing and a bit of my touch here and there.

any other stuff people have??????

It's pretty old, so you probably checked it out already, anyway hope it helps.

Maybe it's just me, but I find ableton to be a bit inflexible for spontaneus DJ'ing. Quite often I have had to swtich to Traktor while on gigs due to running out of prepared audio material in live.

I do love live's ability to build a multitrack mix with FX. I do all my own live shows by mashing up scratch-built tracks (and parts of them) in live. Alas, I always have to carefully prepare all the clips and FX in advance (usually takes me about 1-2 weeks to prepare everything).

But once prepared, nothing sounds as fluid and funky as going live with live.. You can react to the crowd and build things slow or fast, then just fuk it all up with FX, drop a full-lenght pre-rendered choon on it and take a small "inspirational" break..just to come back to the "decks" before the song runs out.. Playing, to me, never used to be so fun and care-free :)

One neat thing I love to do is to use individual sends on channels and mix them up with a hardware DJ mixer! I am not too impressed with software crossfaders (maybe i'm too purist)

You got that right ! ..

I have so much fun with Live ...    Iv been mapping the tempo to a controller lately and just dropping the beat to about 30bpm for a kind of glitchy break down with a hip hop vocal over it , then busting it back up to 135 for the kick in ...

Live is just the best tool .. and its pretty cheap  in comparison ...    Iv never used TRAKTOR though ..  Iv got to much software to use already ;D ...

p.s ..    Welcome to SoundPunk  tetsuneko :)    glad to have you onboard !

Thanks! Glad to be onboard :) And I recommend giving Traktor 3 a try.. It has (up to) 4 decks, nice FX, and quite impressive loop manipulation tools for spontaneous re-arranging / beat-juggling.
