That sync shift looks the bomb, looks like it would eliminate all the timing worries when synchronising external sequencers. Hardware to hardware is zero latency but as soon as you bring the computer in to the equation things get messed up.
I own a TR909 and yes I could live without it... but I don't want to. Theres something about the box even tho I don't use the sequencer that makes the sounds feel alive. If you use samples, they just sound dead - like rebirth does. The clap sounds different everytime and you get nice kind of movement when the sounds interact - you cannot replicate it using samples. You can get the sound perfect but not the character.
Alot of stuff these days is very polished and sounds great but I do prefer a bit more grunge and unpredictability in my sounds. I would love to own a real 808, they sound fantastic.
However I have to say if you are only using odd sounds it don't really warrant spending the cash and I also agree that 808/909 sounds have been done so many times but... they sound just as good today as they did then!!

Firstly - you're a bunch of philistines. How can you have a 2 page discussion on TR's and not mention 808 COWBELL. WHAT A SOUND.

Fabulous discussion. Jester, with the attitude you've got to repeatable conditions you should be making psy-trance and waxing lyrical about how superior the production is in psy. Cos I've never heard that before....but i digress.

I've got a 909. I've got a machinedrum. You can't have either. Ever. I've had an 808 for a while too. I was reluctant to return it.

Stop having this DS is the same as TR conversation. That's just not true. It's certainly similar. But not equal. AT ALL. Shuffle anybody? The kick? Not even close. Sample of a 909 hi-hat sample of a hi-hat? Come on.

Will a machindrum do ANYTHING a TR does? NO. The kick it gets close, but no other sound properly. not hats, not snare. it's different entirely. I'm with No-fi on this one.

You can get midi convertors for the 808. And besides, it's more fun to use the 808 sequencer, fill ins etc, than it is to program it via midi.  It's not just the sound of the 808 that is legendary, it's the awesome sequencer that makes it really fun to jam on.

Even studio muso's and 'seasoned' fan boy 909/808 owners are hard pressed to A/B the difference.

i dunno.... 909 is pretty distinctive and i've not heard a convincing clone yet.... similar but just not right... but that's besides the point :) yeh they're pretty good. i'd like an 808 but pretty happy with the samples i've got - i tend to use treated 808 kicks clavs rims and hats a fair bit... but with the sampling you can pitch & treat them beyond yer regular 808 so um, a real one would just be penisizing. and stupidly fun. the 909 i share with ehsan doesn't get much use anymore either really, mostly just sample it and use those samples for a while until i need more.

Machinedrum is the modern drum machine of choice i believe. jomox's sound a bit funny to me.

i have a mate who is not really a musician but a lover of, and collector of, hip hop and related paraphenalia... he has an 808 and a space echo to jam on at home :) it's a lovely sound!

tried to get a midi-808 a few yrs back, but got ripped off instead. still up there on my list - 909 is irreplaceable in my live sets - an 808 would be killer.

Looks like they may be coming down in price, a couple have failed to sell on ebay, maybe it was the high starting price?

I was lucky to find one for $900 late last year, a friend of a friend wasnt using his, and he had it in his cupboard for years, so I offered him $900.  Bargain!

lucky you..
i really enjoy the immediacy of the drum machine
the 606 is great with the play/write approach and battery powered so its a go anywhere machine
same with the korg er plus the benefit of motion sequence per drum sound makes for some tasty patterns wish they ran off batteries
my 707 is ok but is a bit unreliable, it shuts down when it gets moved to much, faulty power socket or something should really get it repaired so it can come out

Open up the 707 and replace the power socket with an RCA cable, then solder a female/male RCA to the power adaptor.

I did it on mine, and it works a treat!

these days im loving the whole DIY movement and what it brings to the table

did anybody see what the sequencer on the mb808 can do?

the cool this is it can pump out heaps of triggers and cv to extranal gear

i should really stop talking about mine and actually build it

I think the power sockets (2.5mm) are fairly standard ones you can get from Jaycar?
http://www.jaycar.co...w.asp?ID=PS0520

Usually these things are just a dry solder joint. Touch up the power socket with your soldering iron.
I just fixed a DX-100 that had exactly the same problem.
