Haha... was waitin' for this thread to show up. ;D

That (mixing) desk is just superb. I know I've asked you before (and forgotten)... Do you ever mix down anything through it these days, or is it used to tweak sounds on their way into Cubase?

/ Cues me to get my wang on. :)

Yes, you've asked that before :bang:  ;D

I use it all of the time. Most of my tracks are done purely in midi, with only vocals mainly being in audio. My VST synths are typically sent to seperate outs on the Motu. I mix down to the 8 busses as i make a track, and monitor on the monitor outs of the desk. When i go to mix down a track, i'll either record the 8 busses into Cubase, or seperate sounds onto the busses to record them as seperate channels... or as per "Wishful Thinking", i'll use the 8 busses out of the desk sttraight into the 828, and then the internal DSP mixdown on the 828 to make a stereo track. I generally don't use the levels in the motu during a mixdwon - it's all done on the desk.

The only other times i mix down are when i want to re-use a synth. I've only got a limited number of them, so i'll solo bounce it out to a group on the desk, and record that group into Cubase. I'll then send this straight to the main outs, in most cases, and use the mixer in cubase. I want to get either another 828 or 2 * ultralites, and then i'll use the proper 'tape' ouputs on the desk to get 24 channels of direct audio in and out of the PC/desk.

I love the desk - it sounds great, and really does manage to add something to most of the sounds... so it's used all of the time. When i strip down for travelling etc., i use the internal mixer on the 828 and then Cubase. If/when cubase gets proper sends, i'll probably start to use it more and get a HUI for it... moving to mic pre's and motu's for I/O and sell the desk. I think that's a while off, though.

Yeah, I'd like to shift my 1604VLZPRO out of here, running every piece of gear directly into the Digi002 (or whatever interface is piggy-backed into the S/PDIF and ADAT ins), and possible move onto a control surface. Still, love the immediacy of an analog one-knob-per-function desk, and still not sure how well I'd navigate a controller (when the point'n'shoot action of a mouse is soooo quick). Anyway, we'll see.

Question though, could you please enlighten me on what's wrong with Cubase's sends? What can/can't they do? Cheers.

The sends - it's a bit of mucking around to get them to connect to VST effects etc. Easy to send them out of the box, though.
The inserts - they don't work real time. You need to get the audio into cubase, and then apply the effects.

The Accession Studio:

DAW:
- Apple iBook 1.33 GHz, with couple of external drives.
- Pro Tools LE
- Digidesign Digi002
- Assorted software, all registered, no warez, thank you.
- Edirol PCR-M30

Synths:
- Yamaha AN1x
- Kawai K5000S
- Yamaha FS1R
- E-MU Proteus 2000 (Composer, X-Lead, Techno, World ROMs)

MIDI Interface:
- Emagic AMT8

Effect Processor:
- Lexicon MPX 500 (Switches betweem digital insert for DAW, analogue send/return for desk).

Mixing Desk:
- Mackie 1604VLZPRO (used mostly as a mix sketch pad and glorified patch panel these days)

Monitors:
- Mackie HR824

Microphone:
- RØDE NTK

Furniture:
- IKEA

Beer:
- Pure Blonde... still! ;D

Wishlist:
- Novation ReMOTE SL 37 (sell PCR-M30)
- Digidesign MIDI IO for accurate timestamping (sell AMT8 that was supposed to do the job before Digidesign decided to not go ahead and support it.)
- Beyerdynamic DT 880 headphones (and flog these Sony showpony 'phones in the pic - that deliberately don't get a mention in the kitlist - to any DJ that wants 'em. They're not that bad, they're loud if need be, just not the detailed sound I was hoping for when I bought-before-I-heard at an (expensive) wholesale price).
- Digidesign Music Production Toolkit for 48 stereo tracks. (That's right, one must pay for that kind of 'standard' feature with Pro Tools LE. :bang: )

DT880's? Seriously? Have you back to backed them with the 990Pro's?? The 990Pro's are cheaper and have a much more detailed sound across the frequency range - especially the low end. The 880's do have a slightly, and ONLY slightly better mid... The 770Pro's, on the other hand, will give you almost the same DT990 response, at around the same cost, but fully enclosed. Seriously - phone Audio Telex in Aus and ask them where you can demo, and back to back the 880 and 990Pro's. I did, and left with the 990's for $100 bucks less and a whole lot more sound :)

Thanks for the heads up. Haha... sorry, yes, 990's probably what I mean...  :-[ a side-by-side comparison is a must do. I bought some AKG 'phones about 7 years ago, can't remember the model, it had dual drivers in each cup, and I thought they were rubbish. Thankfully, Turramusic were good to take them back. Anyway, will do a good listen around before my next purchase.  :cans:

Here's how my studio was when I was still in Sydney around 5 years ago, and before I downsized to sqeeeze my whole existance into a campervan.

Hardware certainly looks more impressive than software (even if it's mostly Dehdringer® in those racks). :)
