Hmm - I loves my motu 828mk2. Really solid, reliable, sounds crisp as, and operates standalone as well as firewired to the lappie. Measn I don't have to have the lappie switched on to play my other computer, synth etc. Class act all round.

hey i was just wondering... i am getting some sort of feedback through my motu. i'll explain the setup. Macbook > firewire > motu ultralite > firewire > external harddisk (2.5").
At the moment i am running it all off bus power. i get a weird hum sound when the harddisk is spinning up. Is this related to the fact that i have the hard disk daisy chained through the motu? would it be fixed if i supplied external power to the motu (earthing it in a way)? or will i need to disconnect the harddisk from the motu completely?
Apart from that i am loving my MOTU. kicking ass everyday. now i just gotta get some proper monitors. one of these days.

It's generally regarded as bad practise to run a HDD and a soundcard off the same firewire port. If you get the noise when the HDD is spinning up, you've found the culprit... Have you actually tried it with the p/s? I would think that buss powering a voltage hungry thing like a HDD would make it pretty clear that it's a big ask anyway....

yeah i thought it would be an issue. i haven't tried the power supply, i seem to have misplaced it. do motu sell power supplies separate? what's the best fix? don't use the two together? do they make firewire hubs? would this even fix the problem?
Cheers for your help ehsan

No wuzz bruzz.
You can get a power supply as an 'official' accessory but I run mine with an aftermarket 9v jobbie. Mine's a 180mA supply - I don't know how ideal that is tho - perhaps a 300mA is a better idea. The one I got is a slimline p/s too so it actually takes up less powerboard real estate than the original. Chances are you'll actually have a p/s lying around that you can use - and the UL will take either + or - tip adapters.
You could get a firewire hub but really that's just setting up the same stuff in the same way with a different look. I'd go the power thing first - see how you go... Was the system actually working properly before the noise problem or did it start from the outset with the 2 devices?
If you're deadset on a genuine p/s then I'm sure I can arrange a MOTU one for you somehow.
