Hehehee, we must be thinking along the same lines at the moment i tells ya.

I learnt most of what i know through using the various versions of Cubase up to and including SX3.
Now most of my stuff is done in Ableton, however i have heard some really good things about 4.
Most reviews have lauded the new synths as worth the price of upgrade alone.

Still i am thinking of getting Logic Pro when i get my mac.

jah .. tough call huh ...

Arrg!  ;)  same here , im using ableton for a lot of my gear now too ...  the flow process with ableton just works so nicely right now ... i can come up with ideas quickly ....

problem is , if I buy Logic , then my PC will be useless as id be using it all on laptop ...  urgg ...

to hard ;)        Iv heard some good things about cubase 4 though ...  id love to demo it ...

Yeah, well i can understand your frustration there...
Though my plan is once my main PC dies or runs out of puff then will probably buy a mac pro tower.
Then my metamorphisis will be complete....  ;D

i have cubase 4 and it works pretty well there are still a few minor incompatabilities especially on the intel macs as some plugs just wern't ported to UB like the tonic filter and theres a couple others .. and a few 3rd party plugs that aren't vst 2.4  like fxpansion BFD, ik multimedia ampeg svx  and aplitube which i'm particularly spewing about ...

once you go mac you wont go back i was once a devout PC head but mac really is much much better there is so much less fucking around with system settings and drivers and no fucking registry FTW.. to install drag to HDD to uninstall drag to trash so easy ....  set it up out of the box and it works pretty darn well without optimisation i don't miss windows at all ..  and seriously if you know cubase stick with it don't swap to logic unless you want a very steep learning curve i have logic express and it still confuses the fuck out of me.. there is so much fucking around to do easy things that in cubase are a walk in the park .. like it's piano roll editor the velocity lanes aren't connected to the editor you have to open a new window to edit CC and velocity and panning THAT alone made me not want to touch it

cubase does work very well for me on my 2 ghz CD macbook with 1.25 gig ram it is a step up from SX3 i would wait for a 4.1 update though and for the vst 3 sdk to go out once that all happens it will be hard to beat ..

included plugins still aren't up to scratch compared to logic but they are a marked improvement over SX and once the vst 3 standard is sorted we will finally have sidechaining with out work arounds !!!!!!! ..

instrument tracks are a godsend so are track presets..  one click instrument track creation  ..open a vst i and the track opens automatically ready for editing

media bay and sound frame will be superb once it's all supported with vst 3 very much like NI's kore but more usuable being a sequencer level . i would love NI to make core x compatable with soundframe and vice verca. but it wont happen soundframe will win in the end as it's integrated into the sequencer and not a plugin  ..

so i would personally wait till vst 3 is out to 3rd parties and at least a 4.1 update  it's at 4.02 atm and they are playing bug catch ups ..but 4.02 is alot better than the initial release

Hahahaha, i was waiting for you to get here HPS.

Nice overview, it does seem to be a major improvement in a lot of areas and
with the new VST standard having true sidechaining will be an awesome plus for the majority of
users i believe.

Nice review HPS ,  this is the type of thing i want to know ...

Im sick of hearing from people that if you use mac , its just by default that you MUST use logic ...

Dont get me wrong , id like to use logic , but iv learned Cubase  ..... and ableton ... and reason ... id hate to think id have to be learning logic aswell for the mere fact of using a mac ...

HPS comes through with the  Cubase-Mac massif ... represent !  ;D

After scoring an apple dealership, i too am looking at making the move to the 'dark-side' - god, my FireWire gear might actually work for a change!!

Great to see that Cubase does the mac thing - another tick in all the right boxes so far... (you runnin that on OS X or Windoze?)
Though I will be waiting for a 4.1 release before ordering my Steiney Resellers kit :)

Thinkin perhaps a Dual Quad-Core.... might have to beg the bank manager for that one, even with 'staff' prices its gunna be round the $8g mark.

mmm, dual cinema displays....

Awesome! ;D

That's what I keep thinking of too...

...and then the reality of pouring $10,000 into computer equipment makes me feel sick. :)

After scoring an apple dealership

Sorry, are you guys selling Apple now. If so, that's fantastic. Just your store, or across the country? And will staff discounts extend to that? Was thinking Apple operate too tightly with their retailers to allow for that sort of discounting. Kinda like Bose being excluded from Myer "20% of everything" style sales.

(My mind's now ticking over how to get this Mac Book Pro sooner rather than later... :) )

Yeah the whole group has access to Apple now - and those that are directly linked to selling it (ie: Allans staff get the discount but not Vodaphone or any of the 'sister' companies) can get the staff discount -

20-something-% off the Pro line is very enticing too... turns a $3500 lappy into a $2200 affair

Ah yes, but how about for those involved with the 'parent' company? :) Anyway, prob enough chat from me on a public forum on this. Thank you very much for the heads-up though.

I've got C4 Studio. I really like it, but I get this gay bug with the pool window all the time where I cant listen to samples. :)

I'm going to install Vista this weekend. Should be interesting. :D

I mean, how bad could Vista be, really? Let us know how you get on. ;)
