  1. http://www.soundpunk.com/downloads/public/tunes_and_tracks/James New.mp3 This is my newest one. I should warn you that it contains trance Still having trouble with my kick drums, but i think i've made a little progress. Anyway have a geez and give me your thoughts!
  2. ^is that true? Never heard of that. Will have to give it a try when i get home.
  3. ^fucking awesome. Thanks heaps hps, love hearing those sort of methods that i'd otherwise never think of myself. Will def being attempting to follow your recipe tomorrow.
  4. Awesome! very helpful ideas. Never even considered sidechaining a hpf. I'll have a play when i get home! And spectrum: Just reading your post made me tired. Haha.
  5. TankF - Solid bit of advice. I think your work flow will work well for me actually. Re: Giving them space. This is another thing i have difficulty with. I take it by this you mean to have each layer of the kick doing a well defined job by itself? EG, if i had 3 kicks layered they could be seperated such that 1 kick is taking care of freq's below say 140 hz, another might be 140-500 and another might be 500+ ? How concerned should i be about phasing/clashing at the crossover points? Maybe i should stick with layering just 2 samples til i have mastered that then move forward from there? 'finding space' is something i need to practice more i daresay. btw spectrum, just out of curiosity what style do are you making atm?
  6. ^i tend to layer/eq/compress multiple kicks (usually 2 or 3) to achieve something new. Bad technique? Choosing the right samples is definatly a weaker point. I don't know what is going to sit well in my tracks. Usually i start with my kick and build the track from there. By the time i'm half way through it's quiete often the kick that seems most out of place.
  7. Yo! My kicks always either lack depth/bass/fullness but have a good amount of attack/punch OR they will have of depth/bass/fullness but lack punch and definition. I can't seem to find a balance. Hope that makes sense. Does anyone have any advice? Or material i might be able to read. At this stage i consider this one of my greatest weaknesses. Also while i have your attention, how the sweet-jesus-tittie does a mere mortal such as myself achieve a sound like this: [mp3=400,30,0,center]http://www.soundpunk.com/downloads/public/misc/KickTHISbitch.mp3[/mp3] I can't really tell what's happening there. Is it just some sub-bass sidechained to the kick or something? It's TASTY.
  8. [mp3=400,30,0,center]http://www.soundpunk.com/downloads/public/tunes_and_tracks/James%20Mac%20-%20The%20Artist%20Currently%20Known%20As%20Prince.mp3[/mp3] Something i've been working on this week. I've been finding it really hard to actually finish a song of late. This is the only song i've managed to flesh out to over 5 minutes since the first track i posted on here months ago. I still can't get the sound i want from my kicks, Defiantly something i need to work on. Anyways have a listen and give me some feedback. The style might not be everyone's cup of tea.
  9. 1 last thing, the plan at this stage will be to have Ableton on a macbook pro and then i'll have a pc running ableton also. Assuming i have the same vst's on both machines am i likely to have much trouble opening files saved on the mac on the pc? And vice versa?
  10. Ah ok. So suppose i err... lost the cd key for one or two of my vsts, and i was (temporarily of course) using a less than legitimate version, anyone had any experience with this on a mac? *ducks for cover*
  11. I'm in the market for a new laptop and i'm strongly considering a mac book pro. I'm an ableton user and i'm curios as to what (if any) compatibility issues i'll run into when installing vst's on a mac. I've never owned a mac before but as far as i know they are .dll free, which would be a problem for some of my free vst's that don't have a make specific installer? Any input appreciated.
  12. I was playing with ableton today and i'm not sure what i've done, but i've lost the ability to do any automation on my vst's. All the Ableton devices work perfectly (can still put a compressor on a vst and automate it) but none of the parameters for any of my vst's show up in the drop down menu. Have i clicked something by mistake or is it something more sinister?
  13. Rhythmboy, didn't actually end up doing what i was after, but i figured out how to do it regardless: View--> File Manager -->Manage set--->View files You can replace the samples here It was the stuff u posted that led me to discover this menu tho. haha.
  14. Dylab, sinik:thought about doing that but then i would ruin any reference any other project had to the sample too. Rhythmboy: That sound like exactly what i'm trying to do. can't watch the vid here at work but i think you've hit the mark. I'll give it a go when i get home and report back. Thanks guys!
  15. Didn't think this question was worthy of a new thread but i need to ask it nonetheless. So i suggest here is a good place to ask all questions not worthy of it's own topic On to my question: I have a percussive sample loaded into a channel in ableton which i have decided i don't like. The pattern i've used is fairly long and complex so replacing the sample with another sound by hand would take a while. Is there a way to replace the sample across the whole channel while maintaining the pattern i've programmed using the old sample? Hopefully i'm being clear as to what i'm trying to do.
