iPhone/Android music apps - serious potential or forever toys?

09 January 2012 - 07:35 PM

We are probably all aware of the iband phenomenon:

Just wondering if anyone here has started using smart phone music apps as serious 'instruments' in recordings and/or gigs? I'm thinking of giving it a go...

Which stems from my original thought about how 'serious' are these apps getting these days? Have they reached the level of being truly worth using in serious production, or will they forever remain fun toys to play with in an idle moment?

I know apps for ipad are getting more serious for the studio geeks, and even Garageband is increasingly used in 'professional' production, but will the 'iband' become a serious live force or is it just a short-term novelty?

Help me get to 2500 posts please

08 January 2012 - 09:21 PM

Including this one, I think I'm sitting on 2392 posts. Only 108 to get to 2500 - so I'm asking for your help

- ask me any question

- ask me a joke - to which I can reply 'I don;t know, what did the polar bear say to the horse?'

- post a pic or a piece of trivia I'll comment on

- say something to wind me up

- point me to a thread that you think I should comment on

- do whatever gives me an excuse to post

My goal is to try getting to 2500 by the start of Feb at the latest, by the end of next week even better ;)

Best Compilations of 2011?

04 January 2012 - 09:53 PM

Hey folks,

So if I was to looking to get back up to scratch with good representative tracks/songs of 2011 in one foul swoop, which compilations should I buy?

- mainstream top 40
- 'commercial' EDM any genre
- underground EDM/IDM any genre

Can be downloads or CD's, I still use old-school media a bit ;)

Thoughts welcome cheers!

Sonic Visualiser - supreme audio analyzer

01 November 2011 - 09:49 AM

Hey folks,

Have discovered an awesome audio analyzer - Sonic Visualiser from Queen Mary University, London. Free and open-source, supports V-amp plug-ins etc. FFT, spectragraph, pitch correlation, polyphonic music analyzers (will detect key, chord changes, time signature, etc), audio-to-MIDI, plus low-level analysis (onset detection, zero cross-point, spectral centroid, harmonic content, etc.) Can load multiple files at once to compare against each other. Will also output annotations of the analysis as text so you can read the frequencies present in the audio as well as see them.

So if you could scan your head...

08 August 2011 - 11:01 PM

1)I've been looking at a lot of fMRI scans of brains listening to music lately  and

2) looks like next year I may have access to an FMRI scanner to run some music experiments in (true!) :D

I was thinking, aside from the serious stuff, I wonder if I may be able to scam a scan of me listening to.. say... Callum b and Linius 'Folkstep' or some other extremely busy mix - could make some purdy pictures in my head :)

So what would you get yourself scanned doing if you had the chance? ;)
