Is seeing believing?

22 May 2011 - 08:29 AM

Everyone loves a documentary, right?

Saw this recently in a classroom for sales training that was highlighting the possibility that there's a whole lot difference between what's going on and what we think is going on. And I immediately considered how we love to get stuck into music making with our whiz bang dual 30" LCD screens.... ooops!

(It may help to expand the video size to full-screen)

Now consider what impact the DAW (digital audio workstation) GUI (graphical user interface) may have on the final audio product, and why some music programs have a 'blackout' function to switch off the visuals while one truly hears the soundtrack.

So what do you think?

Internal Battery & Reset Resource Page

06 May 2011 - 03:50 AM

So my Yamaha AN1x synth's back-up battery finally gives up gives up the ghost (with a 'low battery warning' on the LCD when booted up) after a good 13 years of service.

For those not familiar of why gear would have these back-up batteries: in the days before cheap reliable gigabytes of FLASH ROM where data can be rewritten over and over on memory chips that would retain their information even when no power is connected, the equipment would typically employ a small lithium watch-type battery, mounted somewhere on the internal circuit boards, to maintain continuous power to the memory chips that were used for system set-up preferences, and perhaps more importantly, the user saved sound patch bank memories.

33 screws out of the back panel (thank goodness, they were all the same size, and literally only on the back panel itself), a $3.99 replacement battery from the Electronic Dick (www.dicksmith.com.au) and we were away again. Be sure to back-up first, 'cause once the battery is disconnected, the patch memories become corrupted in a matter of seconds, if not instantly.

Rather than re-invent the wheel, I thought I'd link you to a most excellent resource page on another production forum...

I can't imagine any gear still relying on batteries these days, but there's plenty of stuff from a decade or more ago in use, so people may run into this issue still from time to time.

The new analog/analogue breeds...

01 May 2011 - 05:35 AM

With the VSTi/AU/RTAS musical instrument plug-in reigning supreme for some many years now, and the legends of analogue audio falling by the wayside decades ago (*cough* Roland *cough* Korg *cough* c'mon, you had the choice, but you still chose to try and make 'virtual analog = the new analogue' happen for the past 15 years), it's the boutique synthesizer designers who are paving the way for modern analogue animals.

And to compete with the warez market, they're doing so with such startling value.

So who's got one, or something similar?

Tell us about it, how does it rate?

Home and (Studio) Contents Insurance?

28 April 2011 - 01:31 AM

Hey Punks,

Curious to how people are incorporating their studios into the house and contents insurance?

Without giving away your home street address and days / times you're away from home: :(

- Were you required to record your equipment serial numbers?Did you need photos? Receipts?

- Did you insure specific items for market value / replacement value, or the modern day equivalent's value?Or was there a general accepted value?

- Is a there an insurer (Australia or Worldwide) that you do - or don't - recommend?

Cheers folks. 8)
